Here’s what you get when you give incomplete cookbook recipes to a neural network trained on the complete works of H. P. Lovecraft
I can already connect to xfinitywifi endpoints. Not sure I understand what this service is offering. Seems like a big move trying to tap into the mobile market though.
They using Verizon dude, just a discount basically for customers to bundle
The MalwareTech one is actually pretty frightening, our press doesn't give a fuck about us anymore.
brandon: this is quite telling lol. "Liar", "Nanny", and "Sense" pure gold
Last year PayScale placed 20th in Seattle Business Magazines "Top 100 businesses to work for" and this year we placed 4th!
It's fun to see my coworkers and CEO pictured in this highlight article.
keenin: Also, did you notice that the second paragraph of that first article is just a duplicate of part of the first paragraph? Did they just fuck up and repeat themselves or am I missing something? haha It's not that Fido Friday is talked about a lot, it's just said twice lol
haha yeah, I think we were having a fido friday when they came to tour the building so they got a bit overly excited about it. You can check out some of the other companies with the free digital version of the magazine. I had some fun looking through it earlier. (That link may or may not work.. looks a little weird haha)
Did you know... “A woman who is asked about her salary history and declines to disclose earns 1.8 percent less than a woman who discloses. If a man declines to disclose, he gets paid 1.2 percent more on average.”
More fun facts inside PayScale's most recent data report:
Interesting, I'd like to see whether or not the employees negotiated for their salary, or just took the offer they were given.
We were talking about what it's like working at Netflix yesterday and so I thought you guys might enjoy this. Marketing just released it today. You can compare 52 popular companies side by side. Unfortunately, Netflix didn't make the list. Amazon and Expedia did though and they are actually very similar. @spkaplan @andelink
That is really cool I can see myself using that whenever salary stuff comes up
Yeah, apparently. It's interesting that they aren't required to give you a helmet but it's illegal to ride without one too haha
I like the idea of being able to look on my phone, see a bike nearby, and hop on it, and drop it off anywhere. Hmm that is weird about the helmet.
I was so pumped when they announced last Friday that they were going to cut prices by quite a lot. This is a great time to eat at whole foods.
haha more like keep it about the cash flow. But yeah, it is cool that they are able to drop prices with their new distribution connections.
I also think its really funny that you can now buy Alexa at whole foods 😂
lol yeah i was aware we were going to sell them there but i didn't notice any when i was there today
Yeah, it's a bit dramatic too haha I think there are still a lot of coding jobs that can't be done by algorithms.
I staunchly disagree with this article. The world isn't even close to automating away software engineers. And to suggest that machine learning is what automates pieces of software development is fucking laughable.
This guy has no idea what he is talking about. I haven't looked at the data, but I would bet money that you cannot just attend a three month bootcamp and then call yourself a software engineer, let alone get a job at a top tech company. Software engineering is difficult as fuck. You must have understanding AND practical experience in such a wide breadth of stuff to be good at it.
Note: I am not a software engineer.
Yeah, we hired a girl who went through a 6 month bootcamp (she's gone now and I have her desk/job) but apparently it didn't work out very well and we aren't planning on hiring from bootcamps anymore. And furthermore, I disagree with the article as well. I feel like it's still a "science fiction" type concept that they are trying to sell.
Yeah the media in general seems to not understand what exactly it is or how it works, and even more so where we are with it. I'd say that the people who are scared of it and the ones with the least understanding, but there are some tech leaders who express concerns over it (e.g. Elon Musk)
I always find these artifical "caps" annoying. It's frustrating to think that you have a vehicle with the power to go farther and longer and but are only restricted by a piece of code that says to limit your battery power unless you pay extra to "unlock" the whole battery.
Yeah what the hell I didn't even know about these driving-range caps. Seems a bit wrong to me too.
Yeah, I do not agree with that. I mean I know that internet companies like Comcast do similar things with your bandwidth but this seems more wrong than that for some reason. Although, I don't agree with the artificial internet caps either.
Amazing technology! When I first read about it I was skeptical that it was actually effective but after watching some videos I'm very impressed. Great stuff
This isn't new anymore but still cool to see it progress. My coworker posted this link saying that they have posted the balloon flight paths on the site but I don't see them anywhere. Let me know if you find the link to the flight path records because I'm interested (I see the pic of it's path over south america but I was hoping for something more detailed).
Clinical trial results using a chatbot to deliver therapy to depression patients: (Apparently, Andrew Ng is joining the board of this startup)
Hmmm interesting. I could see this working pretty well. Will be interesting to follow the development
@r.taylor This reminded me of you since I know you have considered this kind of work
Although this is more about physical security and you usually have considered the digital aspect specifically. Still sounds pretty cool though
Yup, that's pretty much exactly what I want to do. I'm interested in both the the physical and digital aspects, but idk which I'd prefer yet, since I haven't really done either lol idrk how to get started in that profession tho, idk anybody who does it, only ever heard stories
You get into it by doing it yourself lol and figuring out how to hack websites and shit. Also looking for forums with other hackers to learn existing exploits and how to do them yourself.
I'd talk to the CS teacher Julian Rrushi, definitely a weird dude but is god damn wizard when it comes to security.
Yeah, I really don't like Rrushi as a teacher but I feel like he's a passionate researcher so it might be cool to work with him outside the classroom. Granted that he puts more effort in.
He also is the only professor who is getting a substantial amount of grant money for his research, thinks he's gotten at least $400k this year
Please, I subscribe to r/HowToHack, I'm well on my way. I'm mostly just waiting until I actually get into the major and learn real programming, then I'll start doing the research and figuring out what to do and how to do it.
My team's halloween video was featured in GeekWire's geeky halloween article. We are the only video on the page and you can find it by ctrl-f'ing "#strangerthings" if you want to check it out. The demogorgon at the end is pretty badass 😆
https://www.geekwire.com/2017/geekoween-2017-trekkies-amazons-alexa-seattle-area-geeks-get-decked-holiday/?utm_source=GeekWire+Newsletters&utm_campaign=38c32ed1a9-daily-digest-email&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_4e93fc7dfd-38c32ed1a9-234409005&mc_cid=38c32ed1a9&mc_eid=6019be1ab6
@brandon except i'm not seeing you in the photos unless you are the male hotdog farthest to the left?
edit: he has glasses, but still doesn't like too much like you imo
I was the only one who dressed up on my team...
Haha I'm not in any of the photos. I'm only in the video (there is only one on the page) and I'm featured riding a bike and playing DnD about halfway through
Oh I see it now! Haha that's even better! It's the Dyer's place!! I enjoyed your cameo lol
I see that except for the head opening into a giant plant thing
haha yeah the plant head thing is pretty unique i think
I guess that's potentially a spoiler of sorts if you haven't seen the show but whos fault is it really if you haven't seen season 1 at this point 🙄
yeah it's far past the point of preventing spoilers from season 1
nice! yeah we finished it on Sunday. how did you like it?
Haha finally someone else that binged it like Kelli and I! They do the cliffhangers so well. It was really good. I liked the character development and the change of group context and what not. I would say it was on par with season 1. I saw somewhere that season 3 won't be out until early 2019 though which seems so far away...
Yeah I heard the same about season 3 being 2019. Given season 2 took 15 months after season 1 it makes sense.
But yeah I liked it as well. I felt it was a bit cheesy on the kids romance storylines but overall great season. I feel like they upped the gore/violence a bit which made it extra seat-clenching
Yeah, agreed! It was a bit darker at times than season 1 which was fun. But then they lightened the mood again with all the cheesy child romance haha
And here's a 3d printed model turtle that when slightly "distorted" get classified as a rifle from every angle. I can't even tell the difference between the original and the distorted and I don't have sound so I don't know what they did to it. Someone let me know if they explain it more in the video! haha
People give them so much credit these days but they are still so brittle. Although, I guess we should really be impressed with the concept of NNs in general haha It's pretty amazing that they can do what they do already.
Yeah that has been a really hot area of research recently, b/c it is super dangerous. You could imagine it being used maliciously to trick say... a self driving car into thinking a stop sign isn't really a stop sign. Or a person it's really a person 😲
AWS DeepLens - a video camera specifically for deep learning:
Looks pretty cool
Wow, what a cool Governor. I'm really glad I at least belong to the most proactive state in the country right now.
What's the general mood in the air at your work today? Given your connection to Comcast and the fact that you guys manage a lot of these data pipelines that will soon become much more "configurable".
Honestly, we don't deal too much with that and the mood around here hasn't changed much.
Haha well, that's good. So, this won't effect your business much? Is that because you guys mostly deal with live broadcasting or because you deal with television instead of the internet or what?
Idk, I think it will affect our business more than we think, but that's just me. I don't think a lot of the higher ups think it will affect us.
Yeah, nobody is really giving it much thought over here either but in a worst case scenario, it could have a huge effect on us!
Would you say that it's accurate that you guys deal more with tv broadcasting than internet streaming? Or is it both? I still don't REALLY know what your company does...haha
We provide the backend to make it so your company can stream videos/live events.
i.e. Steam uses us in their Steam Application for their videos. They pop the player in their app and we facilitate all the requests that player makes to the video content, etc.
Oh, interesting. Any other big notable clients? So would you consider it a Content Management Service? Do companies like Twitch and YouTube just do this management themselves?
Roku, SlingTV, Walmart, A&E, Starz, and Time are all customers.
Wow. Well it is obvious they fear autonomous cars will lose them a lot of customers
Oh I hadn’t thought about that. Or they see a huge opportunity to monopolize self-driving car use in cities.
@spkaplan I’m thinking about it again and idk if my initial reasoning was right. I would love to see the data behind this, but I assume that Uber/Lyft largest demographic is young people. And will young people even buy self-driving cars? I imagine they’d be expensive af. But then I also think maybe their main demographic is young people with too much money so they pay to go everywhere? Maybe those people would drive self-driving cars?
This might be a rough analogy, but when touch-screen was first kind-of a thing, it was restaurants (from what I recall). You know touch menus and all that. And I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the restaurant industry trying to outlaw individual consumers from owning touch-screen technology. Maybe there wasn’t much vision for its future? Idk I just have a hard time understanding the reasoning behind such a law that Uber, Lyft, & friends are trying to push.
I think the idea is that they can completely control the traffic flow through the city. The cars can move around with awareness of every other car in the city using algorithms to optimize flow. At least that was my vision of it.
It makes sense. I mean you could look at it as all Ford self-driving cars are part of a fleet, so you could buy a Ford self-driving car. Seems like no one would be a lone fleet unless they created/programmed one on their own. Which, yes, would be dangerous.
Hmm that’s an interesting idea - groups of self-driving cars can optimize wrt each other. Seems easier to just use google maps though
I think you need to think bigger than Google maps though. Google maps tells you what current traffic conditions are but it can't predict where those cars will be in 5 minutes. These systems could know where every other car is and will be. So the system could send 20 cars/min down a road with an optional flow of 20 cars/min. I just think that one entity driving 10,000 cars will be more efficient than 10,000 entities driving one car each. Or they are just trying to take advantage of people.. who knows.
I don’t think it would be a centralized system, you need to decentralize the computation and logistics of each car it seems like. And to do that optimally you probably need something like a blockchain, but with much less overhead. I.e. each car has a ledger of every other cars current location/destination. And in this context, they mean a fleet to be akin to a block chain. The car needs to be a part of some decentralized network from which other cars can find it. Just playing with ideas here though.💡
Wow, didn't know about that. Pretty cool honestly, fills the niche of delivery from brick and mortar stores.
Hmm seems like everything google is doing lately is reactive to competitors. Nothing new or innovative.
@keenin Postmates already exists. As does Prime Now.
And Safeway and Walmart both have their own in house delivery services now too. I'm sure there are others but those are the two that come to mind
Oh, and they probably built this to further integrate with Google Home. Could have just come about from a group's "20% project" or something honestly. I feel like you just have to build a system that talks to all of these different stores APIs for ordering.
I wonder if they do their own delivery or outsource it and eat the cost.
They stopped with the 20% personal time a couple years ago
haha depends on the item I guess. Isn't postmates delivery fee pretty big?
I feel like Google does so many things like this and spends $0 on marketing. I wonder what their returns on this project have been.
I get free delivery on orders over $20. Other than that it ranges from a couple dollars to several dollars, yeah.
Oh ok, well Google says it's only free delivery for orders over $25-$35 so they don't even beat postmates in that respect.
Looking forward to trying this.
But what are most recent things google has done? I’m struggling to come up with some
Full disclosure: I pay like a dollar a week for Postmates free deliver on $20+ orders
haha wow, so do you use postmates for a lot of grocery shopping? Amazon Go and the normal grocery store too much trouble? Or is it for last minute things? I always thought of it as fast food delivery but I guess it's more than that. I saw a postmates guy buying ecig cartridges for someone once.
No I rarely use it for groceries - only a couple times.
I too view it mostly for food delivery, similar to UberEats
Haha I was curious what your response would be 🙂 But yeah, I feel like it's a bit silly to frame it in this way. The reason for the cuts make sense and honestly hundreds of workers doesn't even make a dent in the overall work force. They are just reallocating and making room for expansion I think.
Yeah there was a hiring freeze in the retail/marketplace business. Devices and AWS unaffected. But every year the bottom 6-7% of performers are put on PIPs and most of them end up getting cut. This annual practice was temporarily suspended last year because HR was trying something new. Jeff B didn’t like the new system so the old stack ranking is back.
Internal chatter suggests the last year break in firing low performers in combination with aggressive hiring has resulted in bloated operations. Maybe that’s why it’s news? Not sure. But I don’t think it has to do with shifting resources to other business opportunities. Orgs outside of Retail are taking internal transfers from Retail but the layoffs are just business as usual, at least from what it seems to me.
Has anyone used the new Firefox browser that came out a couple months ago? It looks pretty cool. And they just released this extension which is a nice addition in regards to privacy.
I was honestly thinking of switching to Firefox because of that extension lol. Seems like it's a must have after the news broke.
Wow, reading that article makes it sound like how Facebook gets people data is super easy. Oh you clicked a link that doesn't go to Facebook? Here's a cookie we can use to track you until you get back to Facebook.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. I mean I guess we shouldn't be so surprised that we are their product but definitely not something people really think enough about.
Also, kind of fuckin scary! Saw this on reddit yesterday and one of the comments was "That tin foil hat is looking less and less crazy every day" haha got a good kick out of that one.
Some Orwellian type shit once Amazon starts sucking in that data through their Alexa.
I’ll be there to help Amazon read peoples minds and place orders for them before they realize they need it
I would be so much more onboard with China if they didn’t block websites
It’s just like the Black Mirror episode “Nosedive”
I read about this a couple years back but had kind of forgot about it. I didn't realize it was so close to implementation! This is very scary indeed. The fact that the scoring system is a black box means that the government can use it to control people regardless of the circumstances. Your score could plummet over night and there would be nothing you could do about it and no explanation necessary. Terrifying.
I find this super disturbing but at the same time this does not surprise me at all.
Cool list of GeekWire's "Top 200 PNW Startups". I'm not sure what the definition of a "startup" is. Maybe not publicly traded? But I was surprised by some of the companies on the list. Pretty cool to see PayScale at #5 too 😁
What a surprise Sirqul didn't make the cut
Honestly, I was very surprised not to see Qualtrics on that list with them being such a large private company in Seattle. I've got to imagine they just aren't considered a startup anymore with ~1500 employees. I wish they would define "startup".
I also was wondering that. Also, Qualtrics' HQ is not in Seattle, which could also be part of the criteria for this list. Startups that started in Seattle.
I feel like this is good, but going to lead us somewhere we don't fully understand yet... Like if you grew up not having to call/talk to anyone and just relied on google to do all your communicating, how inept would you be in society?
Yeah, it's cool tech but I agree, I'm not sure it's very good for us as human beings.
I agree -- I think the power of AI is awesome but the social repercussions that we don't fully understand makes me somewhat skeptical.
But I think this is awesome. I would totally use this to handle scheduling.
There was so many cool things from Google I/O this year. Many of the things were definitely scary I agree, but cool technology regardless.
Kind of cool though. I wonder if this will bring about any cool integrations for C#/.NET stuff (or just large scale project management in general). Atlassian hasn't really had any competition.
Also, from someone at work: "At Build, they showed a new feature for VS Enterprise where if you wanted to navigate into the code in a package you had imported and the code was available on GitHub, you could debug into the package code as if you had package code hosted locally. That is maybe just the start of what will come."
Seems like they have already started investing in new features.
Wow... or maybe nothing is open source anymore and now Microsoft just bought a majority of the software on the planet XD
You have personal private repos you're worried about 🤨
I feel like GitHub is still a great space for personal projects and sharing. They have set up a really collaborative platform that others don't really have. But I suppose if you aren't trying to share and collaborate, who cares.
GitHub doesn't own the actual code it hosts. Only hosts it, so there should be no worry of Microsoft trying to pull some shit like that
This seems like an odd move to me. Not sure what their objectives are with it
Check out the "GitHub acquisition makes a lot of sense" part of the second article I posted. Microsoft is moving it's platform toward being heavily open sourced so this will help them with that.
And yeah, I agree with your point on them not owning the code. I don't think there's anything to be afraid of. Bitbucket is also owned by a corporation so I don't see why it's any different. I see an argument being made for moving your repos over to GitLab since it's open source on an MIT license so it's more transparent but I don't see the argument for Bitbucket.
I mean if you can't see the benefit of more private repos.. as Github only allows one personal private git repo and bitbucket allows more.
All gitlab is is just a giant private repo, which I have been looking at hosting my own.
Also, Microsoft could change the EULA at anytime or the license that you agree to as a Github user.
Oh yeah, if you just need more private repos, I totally get it but that's different than the privacy argument.
Is there a reason Microsoft is more likely to change the EULA than Atlassian?
IDK cause they have a lot of skin in the game lol. And because I distrust any large company of keeping an acquisition the same as before they bought it 😛
In case anybody has time to network on Thursday, I thought this was cool.
I feel like you need to take this with a grain of salt (not to say Payscale isn't amazing!).
It seems like just a marketing ploy. Most of the summaries of the companies are pretty vague and apply to most companies lol.
Yeah, definitely just a marketing tactic. I think most of the decision is based on employee submitted surveys anyway 😆
Right? haha shameless self promotion! But it is cool to see the unique perks some places have.
Yeah, it's really good publicity because we'll be featured in their next magazine as well. Just helps get the name out there more.
That's dope! I wonder how accurate the measuring is for diameter and length
[alexa plug]
check out amazon.com rn for a ton of announcements.
I work in Alexa and I'm always as equally surprised by these launch announcements. I'm only ever aware of a handful and then boom hit with some ridiculous number like 70+ new devices/features/devtools it's absurd.
More succinct list here:
Is it airbnb but for renters not property owners? Interesting idea.
My understanding is that it is airbnb for property managers/renters. It is basically an amenity that an apartment building can offer to its long-term renters, so they can rent their place out when they are on vacation. Today is it always against your lease to put your apartment on airbnb, but this would make it allowed. Both the longterm renter and property manager would benefit, because they would split it.
I would definitely be more interested in an apartment building if I had the option to rent it out when I was not there
My question is: who would date him but not be in it just for the money?
That was an interesting little read. I wish we learned what its real purpose was.
The weirdest part, and my favorite was this though:
Oddly enough I found a website from 2001 where parents of "gifted children" write articles about them and for some reason sign those articles with their home address and phone numbers.
Cool! I definitely see myself doing something like this once I have a public facing front door. Could just be fun to play around with as well.
side note: where do you find these things @keenin. do you actively search or have sites or sub-reddit pages?
The one above is just from browsing the site Brandon linked. Searching github you can find good shit too
Yeah, that guys blog is pretty cool! I can't figure out how to sign up for a mailing list or anything though..
So, this happened yesterday. Not really sure what to make of it yet.
Big things a-happnen! Do you know anything about why he is stepping down, etc...?
He said yesterday during the announcement that he just felt like it was the end of a chapter. He's been with the company for 15 years and thinks it's time for a fresh pair of eyes capable of taking us to the next level in growth/scale.
This new guys seems to have done good shit at Concur. I mean they got bought out by SAP like Qualtrics.
Please share the impact of this change with us. I’m curious about how soon, and to what degree, the day-to-day and culture of a company changes with a new externally sourced CEO.
Yeah, will do! It will definitely be interesting. He seems like a good fit but all I have to go off of so far is his opening speech lol
Yeah lol the one written for mass-appeal to inspire vision and support in employees
Surprised, but happy nonetheless to hear this https://www-cnbc-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/09/19/jeff-bezos-speaks-about-amazon-sustainability-in-washington-dc.html?amp_js_v=a2&_gsa=1#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnbc.com%2F2019%2F09%2F19%2Fjeff-bezos-speaks-about-amazon-sustainability-in-washington-dc.html
Me too! 😄 I was just surprised to see it based on some of Bezos’ other public statements about Amazon’s climate change efforts.
Yeah wow, this is very cool. It will be good to see them implement some of the features I've heard other companies are utilizing for their data centers. Also, the electric vehicles seems like a necessary step in the right direction. I think this will make a big difference.
Honestly I have no idea. I stopped following and caring about these launches. I’m so checked out of this job.
Ok, so I'm not really blown away with the product itself and this guy is a little annoying... but Microsoft+Android seems pretty huge! They partnered with Google to create a Surface phone/tablet running Android 😮 Very cool innovation in the tech space imo and not something I would have expected from either company.
Microsoft has come a long ways in terms of adopting and partnering with competitors/open-source
I think the product is neat. Not for me, but still cool
Yeah, totally. And yeah, I agree. It seems awkward to hold and way too big for me to consider as a phone I'm going to keep in my pocket all day.
haha yeah, it's pretty crazy looking. The video in this article is a bit better in my opinion.
The problem I see is that most truck drivers are not into electric cars in general, nor do they care about driving electric. But I could be wrong if the utility is way better.
mark did make changes that drove out strong leadership.. including Aman (president of BEX)
Idk how acquisitions work for public companies. Any payouts for you?
Also what do you think about this in general? What about your team? Company chat in blind?
It is just speculation by analysts at this point, but it sure is fun to consider the outcome if it did happen
Oh I see. Didn't read the full article. Looking now I see an estimated buyout at ~$250B which is just insane
haha yeah, no kidding. Some on blind are speculating that they could spin off a cloud company and raise money via an IPO
I don’t think I fully understand the impact of this
I don’t quite understand the full extent either. It seems like having a law degree would help 😄
Some other articles lay out the direct impacts to drivers and riders more clearly
Better than Chrome!? I might just have to give that a try. Has anyone tried it yet?
I have a little bit. It feels like they just put their own skin over chrome lol you can import all of your bookmarks and extensions and it has the same developer tools. It sounds like Edge might have better memory management and privacy settings though. I need to explore it some more.
I've been using it for a couple days now and haven't really noticed. It's actually really nice. I haven't felt the need to immediately switch back to chrome like I have in the past lol
Wow this sounds pretty good actually. Make a copy of chrome with better privacy controls and I’m sure people will want to use it
I heard the sad news :( 3k people. I hope you're not affected, Tia. I know one person in my old org that was let go.
I guess this was the natural progression after adding the Linux kernel to Windows 10 but I'm still surprised and impressed!
I think I'll be installing most of these tomorrow! I don't know why they haven't integrated them into the core OS yet. They all seem pretty great.
https://www-cnbc-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/05/28/microsoft-open-source-powertoys-collection-compliments-windows-10.html?amp_js_v=a3&_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA%3D#referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnbc.com%2F2020%2F05%2F28%2Fmicrosoft-open-source-powertoys-collection-compliments-windows-10.html
They all look like great tools! 👏 Hope they make it into Windows permanently
I hope this kicks off a new race of tech CEOs keeping their employees home the longest
I forgot to post about this earlier. @andelink Is there talk w/in Lyft about Tesla’s presumed upcoming ride-hailing network?
I don’t know if it is confirmed, but it makes a ton of sense. Hypothesis: Tesla starts a ride hailing service soon with human drivers and customer’s cars to start learning the ropes of the ride hailing business. Once they crack full autonomy, they don’t need human drivers anymore, and can just use customer’s cars and split it 50/50 (or something) with the car owner. Even with sharing with the owner, without a driver, they can under cut ride hailing services that use a driver (uber/lyft).
Of course the big assumption is that they crack full self-driving first, but it is looking more and more like they will win that race.
I think the scenario you describe heavily depends on their ability to turn any car (namely the user/passenger) into a self-driving car.
Lyft partners with self-driving car companies to plop their tech into Lyft’s fleet of vehicles and network
They have the ability to do that. Surprisingly, they have even sent updates that increase the car’s range and reduce the braking distance
They have mastered over the air updates. They send new updates that improve how much the car can driver itself on a regular basis
So I could put a Tesla device in my 2005 Hyundai Accent to turn it into a self-driving car?
Didn’t you say Tesla (the company) could turn any car into a self-driving car?
You just drop the self-driving tech into an existing vehicle
Once they crack full autonomy, they don’t need human drivers anymore, and can just use customer’s cars and split it 50/50 (or something) with the car owner.
I think the scenario you describe heavily depends on their ability to turn any car (namely the user/passenger) into a self-driving car.
They have the ability to do that.
Are you talking about Tesla vehicles only here?
Oh well I would guess there isn't nearly enough Tesla vehicles in the hands of customers to have a reliable fleet for ride-hailing
And would Tesla owners be willing to lend their $100k car to poor people for rides to bars and restaurants? I doubt the Tesla owners need that extra bit of cash, however much it would be
Yeah, not currently. It is definitely predicated on them ramping up production and continuing to bring down the price of the vehicles.
EVs will become cheaper than gas cars in the near-ish future, and when that happens the transition to electric will happen quickly and more will be on the road.
What I was trying to say earlier is that Lyft L5 is working on a sort of plug-and-play self-driving car technology so that you can take any car and put the autonomous system in it to convert it to a self-driving car
No doubt once EVs are economical and autonomous cars are realistic then yeah that's a game changer to the ride-hailing industry. Once autonomous cars are realistic no one will own cars. You just call one when you need it and it will arrive in <10 minutes and then you're off to your destination. Then that car goes and does it again for someone else and so on and so forth in an effort to maintain high utilization rates across all vehicles in the world
I don't keep up with the autonomous vehicle efforts. Is Tesla the leader? I would have guessed Waymo, but I couldn't tell you why
Tesla is so dope it's the one car I actually want to own
It's tough to say, but Tesla has the most data (roughly 3.5billion autonomous miles driven) vs waymo's 20million. I think their lead is due to the fact that all privately owned teslas send data back to Tesla.
I didn’t watch all of it, only some. These hearings always feel so pointless, because nothing actually seems to come from them. It’s sad
Yeah and it was pretty boring. I couldn’t get through much
I don’t know specifically, but at least something actionable. It feels like it is just an exercise that demonstrates these companies don’t have to answer to congress. Anytime they get a tough question, they just answer “I don’t know those details” or “We do our best to …“. I’m just trying to understand the purpose of it 🤷
I wonder what the purpose really is from the perspective of congress when you're right nothing actually happens
I definitely don’t claim to have the answer to any of it. But when there are meetings at work that didn’t result in any actions, I feel like the time was wasted. And can you imagine wasting the CEOs time… 😬
Nope but I will follow this thread about it’s progress 😎
😎
Ive signed up to receive notifications, but nothing so far. From what I've read, the northern part of the US (washington included) will be one of the first areas to get coverage, until more satellites go up.
Oh nice stoked to hear that. Any speculation on when general availability will be (WA and elsewhere)?
Edit: my b I did not mean to send to the channel
I think all they have said is they will start taking customers in 2020. I haven’t heard any other dates. I am pumped at the prospect to drop Comcast
A new ISP - and one with such innovation - is very exciting indeed. I hope it can offer reliably high-speed internet for prices that will cause all the existing ISP giants to substantially improve their services. The sort of new competition that will make all internet better, faster, and cheaper.
Just signed up for their updates as well excited
I didn't think they would be prioritizing a major metropolis like Seattle tho. Thought they were focusing on rural areas and places without good internet access. We shall see I guess
I completely agree about the need for competition. This should really force other ISPs to pick up the pace.
Yeah, that is where they are prioritizing, but I bet it won't be long until they have global coverage...unless they can't match the price and/or speed of existing coverage in cities.
I gotta say... Elon Musk is quite the impressive entrepeneur, at least on the surface (idk too much about him). Everything he does is pretty exciting and, to a fair degree, disruptive.
I recently started learning more about Elon. He is out of this world smart. I like him because he is an engineer and wants to make the world better.
No kidding. I was surprised to read that SpaceX and Tesla were founded in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
(In the same vein but not Elon Musk, I was also surprised to find out that Shazam was founded in 1999!)
One of the craziest things I found out about Tesla is their “Secret Plan” they published in 2006.
tl;dr At the end of the doc they said:
So, in short, the master plan is:They are referring to the roadster, model s, model 3, and their solar roofs/powerwall.
* Build sports car
* Use that money to build an affordable car
* Use that money to build an even more affordable car
* While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options
That's awesome. I wish I had that sort of vision and tenacity required to execute it
Haha right. They put their plans out there, b/c they know they will get their first I guess 🤷
Wow, shazam was starting 1999…that is soooo long ago. It is impressive it survived so long
I'm excited to see master plan part deux play out
Yeah and I feel like I didn't even really hear about or use Shazam until maybe 5 years ago or something? Maybe earlier 5-10 years ago
Me too. It is going to be super cool if it pans out. Their ability to state a plan and execute for years is impressive
Same. I didn’t hear about it for a long time. probably not until I had a smart phone I guess
Apparently Shazam can also identify movies, advertising, and tv shows. Haven't tried that out yet tho
Wow, that is cool. I honestly have hardly used it before.
My pixel shows a little notification w/ the song name if it hears music playing in the background, even without me opening an app, which is actually really nice
Oh wow that is really nice. I want that. Do you kow if that uses Shazam to do so?
I got the update from Starlink about availability in my coverage area 📡
... but after clicking order now and entering in my address I got hit with "net yet available in your area" 😔
Have you gotten any coverage announced for up in bellingham?
When I clicked order now, I was brought to a screen where I could have completed my order. However, comcast is still doing fine, so until they bring the price down, and/or enable you to bring your dish with you when traveling (e.g. camping) I'll stay with comcast. As soon as it is closer in price, I would probably do starlink. I'd rather support spacex than comcast.
Starlink isn't designed to serve densly populated areas, so it may never make sense to get it while you live in the Seattle area.
Yeah reading this thread again I’m reminded of that
I had heard about the shutdown in California. This is good news for you Kyle, Im sure! Congrats!
Dang I really wanted to watch this but I’m driving for a camping trip this weekend. Gonna have to look up the tldr later
Is anyone else wishing they could cancel meetings this afternoon that overlap w/ Battery day lol?
I have no-meeting Tuesday so I’m chillin anyways 😁
Jealous!! I go on-call today AND I have 2 meetings this afternoon. Lots of fomo going no haha. I will have to pause the stream and be behind
Hahaha I would trade my schedule with you if I could I think you’d appreciate it more than me lol
I just need the $TSLA to spike so I can exit my position and move on with my life
I am not sure whether it will. Either it will b/c the news will be huge, or lots of people bought leading up to battery day and are expecting to sell on the news, so it will go down. We’ll just have to see
The muskrat himself is telling ppl to lower their expectations
I think the media is mis-interpreting that most recent text. All he said is it won’t be in large scale production until 2022, doesn’t mean that it isn’t still groundbreaking new tech. That’s my feeling
He has been hyping it a lot in the last few weeks, and I don’t think he would hype it is it wasn’t very cool. 🤞
the dude is up there with the mic but no sound yet
dippin out of the shareholder meeting in the mean time
disclaimer: I might miss the transition from investor meeting to battery day if I am in a meeting 🙂
offical investor day portion is over. Now it is “year end review” presented by elon. Then battery day will start
sure makes tesla look better than the other carmakers
i have essentially zero idea why i'm watching this
Simply put, so far they have said:
i just like to watch super efficient factories do their thing
Interesting. I knew Amazon was working on drone tech but this isn't what I expected 😄
"ftfy"?
lots of shoddy url sharing going around lately...
@andelink haha, yea, now that i pointed it out, I bet you'll see it everywhere
I was already anti-amp before you mentioned it I. The text but I’m glad you did I didn’t realize folks weren’t awRe of it
Oh, I'm aware of it. I have just yet to find someone with an argument against it that I can get on board with.
i just hate getting a google link just to go to some other website
compare sam's link to the actual fucking website
why should i have to go through google to get to my destination
Google is doing you a service by storing a pre rendered version of the web page without ads on edge nodes near your current location for faster load times.
Most of the time when you are viewing these pages you don't even notice because they only appear on mobile and the url isn't even exposed.
This is something that content producers opt into in order to better serve a mobile audience. Google isn't forcing them or doing it without their consent. Although I would expect that google probably gives preference to amp content in mobile search results because they want to encourage it and it's a better experience for the user.
I do agree that sharing the urls sucks though. They need to figure that part out.
Google is doing you a service
you don’t even noticeI always notice. There is a Google header. The website is embedded in an Amp container of sorts, at least it looks like that from the users perspective.
probably definitely gives preference to amp contentftfy
Well, currently, I've not seen actual data on how well it works, I've only heard claims from people with opposing opinions. Like I've said a couple times, I'm more opposed to the entity behind the product rather than the product itself because I'm scared of the lack of freedom and diversity a monopoly brings. And prioritizing or hiding websites based on how much data they feed you is a bit scummy.
Check that white bar at the top. That’s every amp web page I visit from Google
Yeah, I think we just disagree on the motives here. Coming from a background where SEO was a big focus I think it's impossible to build a good website without providing google with the metadata they need to understand your content. There is a ton of metadata and labels that you have to apply throughout a site if you want it to be indexed and presented with priority for certain searches.
So I think that although you aren't wrong that they are prioritizing content that feeds them more information, I think that's inevitable and it's part of the game. Google is a search engine and it needs to understand your content.
The reason they are doing this is because they want people to engage with more content. Faster load times means lower bounce rates. So I think Google's motivation is to increase engagement. Kyle, you said this benefits them. I'm sure it does, but what did you mean by that exactly?
What happens when you click the little information button in the top left? Is that an amp disclaimer?
I agree though, that's a bad experience. It decreases your viewing window and just shows google.com in the actual header 🤔 very odd.
No, the data is coming from the user, who is now accessing a Google server instead of the owner of the site. Any data that the user wants to give the site is now being directed through Google first.
Google is free to get as much metadata from the site as they want, no issue with that.
The info icon displays this and then links to this:
https://support.google.com/websearch/?p=AMP
@r.taylor That's true. You are accessing the data from a google server now, but only if you used the google search engine to get there. It's a caching solution that I personally don't think we should really be surprised about in this era. If you don't want google to know how you are browsing the web, you shouldn't be using chrome or google search in the first place.
@andelink Thanks for the info. That's good that they are upfront about it and provide an alternative option to view the original page but I absolutely hate the container bar thing. I'm with you on that aspect. I don't know why you are experiencing that while I am not. Maybe an Apple specific rule?
Or, if someone only sends you amp links 😝 But, yea, I don't use anything google browsers or search engines at this point, as far as I'm aware of. And I'm not surprised with the solution, like I said, no problem with the product itself, just the entity behind it and how the product can be abused.
Haha yeah, that's a fair point. Pulling the real url out of the amp url on mobile would be a tedious task. What search engine do you use? I used DuckDuckGo for a bit but now I just bounce between Google/Chrome on mobile and Edge/Bing on desktop (unless the results suck then I default back to Google).
@r.taylor if you open an amp url in Firefox on mobile, what does the page look like? Does it look more like Kyle's screenshot or mine?
Yea, I use DuckDuckGo, which I think just uses Bing, but don't quote me on that. I don't know if I've ever consciously opened an AMP link, so I can't tell you.
I haven’t been following cloud gaming much. Who is in the lead? When do you think cloud gaming will become the de facto standard?
Everyone is kind of approaching it a bit differently as the article outlines. Stadia has the biggest head start but xbox has a huge audience base and an existing platform to build on. I think it will be a couple more years before it has the potential to become the new standard. For people with gaming PCs, installing the game locally is still going to be much better (for now). Game streaming widens the audience a lot for sure though. I'm probably biased but I think xbox is doing it right by bundling it with xbox live and their game pass (netflix for games). It's just so accessible since a lot of people are already familiar with the brand and services.
Soooo… just gotta say it after thinking about it some more the past few days…battery day blew my mind
…
I’m sure you can tell my work-brain has just about shut off for the week lol
Hey all be sure to sign up for Lyft Pink esp now that it comes with free Grubhub+ membership
Yeah, I think no sound for first guy. Second guy has been filming all day with other youtuber friends of his so I'm expecting/hoping for more videos once he has time to post.
It might take a bit, but there is no way it won't go to the moon. Fsd unlocks SO much
So, this is really cool but I thought tesla already had full self driving capabilities. What are the main features in this new iteration?
Great question! This is a common confusion. So, basically Tesla has a bunch of disparate smart capabilities (e.g. self park, traffic aware cruise control, auto park, etc...). All Teslas come with what they call "Autopilot", which is basically a subset of their smart capabilities. Additionally tesla sells a "Full Self Driving" package. This package contains some more of their smart features, plus any and all advancements they make in full self driving capabilities. So, this package/grouping of features grows over time, until ideally they reach true full self driving.
Now, the new "Full Self Driving Beta" mentioned in all the videos is a new feature added to their "Full Self Driving" software package. The reason is it such a step function improvement from where they currently are is because it is based on an entirely new software stack they have been building for the last couple of years. They started this new software rewrite because they essentially hit a dead end with their old software/direction. With this new iteration they have been able to achieve much much much better driving on surface streets, which before was not very good. Basically before it could only go straight on well marked roads, now we can see it making turns, choosing and changing lanes, inferring lane edges when there are no lane marking, doing round-a-bouts, and just generally driving so much better than it currently can.
Hopefully that helps clarify a bit. Feel free to ask more questions :)
Awesome, thanks for the info. I didn't realize it's autonomous capabilities were so limited before. I read some of the feedback and watched a couple of the videos you sent. Looks very impressive. Will you be getting this update in your new car soon?
Elon says this time they “have it right”, and now they are on the March of 9's. In other words, they need to solve enough edge cases that they reach a high enough level of safety that it will be accepted by regulators and gain the public’s trust. It will never be perfect, but it needs to be many many time better than the average human before they will release it widely. Elon said he hopes to roll it out to the rest of the fleet by the end of the year. I am optimistic, but I’m not holding my breath. Impressively, they have already pushed 2 updates to the beta since they released it ~10 days ago. They are moving as fast as possible to make bring it to the rest of the fleet. After that, the next question is how long until they can start robotaxis and which cities will be first 🤑
Have any of you heard of Matrix? It's an open standard for decentralized messaging that aims to replace current apps like Slack and Teams. Shameless self-plug, but I just finished a series of write-ups about it on my site if you want some more info:
@spkaplan Whoa, big purchase!
The Washington Post: FAQ: What a Slack acquisition could mean for remote work.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/12/01/slack-salesforce-acquisition-faq/
The UX is more complicated than it needs to be IMO and they don't have threads in DMs/Groups. They only have them in Teams channels.
I just realized we haven't talked about the recent SpaceX Starship launch. Has anyone else watched it?
Apple recently rolled out their privacy labels for everything in their App Store, calling them the “nutritional label for apps.” Here’s a nice comparison between a few different messaging apps. It’s as expected but interesting to compare nonetheless. Facebook Messenger is the junk food - and the article/picture here doesn’t even include its “Developer’s Advertising or Marketing” section.
On a related note, it’s rumored that the reason Google hasn’t updated their iOS apps in weeks is to avoid publishing their privacy labels since none of the Google apps have been updated since the privacy label requirement has been rolled out 🙃
@r.taylor I feel like you'd find this interesting, even if unsurprising
This is super interesting. I am looking forward to seeing google’s apps as well
I am giving it a trial run. Turns out it only encrypts when both parties are using signal, but at least it isn’t taking & selling my data
Cool. I've heard about signal enough times now that I guess I'll download it too to see what it's about.
It's nothing fancy. It's just a texting app that doesn't sell your data. And if both parties are using it, then yours texts are encrypted. I have switched to it
It uses normal SMS when one party doesn't have it?
A little late to the thread, but I'm glad you guys are thinking about your personal data security! @andelink, you're right, totally not surprised haha. I use Signal as my default messaging app and I'm completely okay with it. I've never had any problems with the UI but my girlfriend didn't like that she couldn't customize the look as much as the default Android app. And yes, normal SMS when one party does not have the app, since Signal is also the name of the secure messaging protocol, and both users must be following compatible protocols for secure messaging to work in any circumstance.
Also, a quick note, Signal also does E2EE voice and video calls.
By default, it looks like SMS/MMS is disabled. I imported my contacts into the app and I can see who else has signal installed which is cool. More people in my contacts than I would have expected. Also really reminds me that I need to clean out my contacts. So many old coworkers and classmates in there!
I'm a huge Signal advocate if you all cant tell haha, definitely recommend checking it out if you at all care about that sort of thing.
I guess for me it comes down to how many of my friends/family use iMessage vs how many use Signal. I’d guess more use iMessage so more of my messaging would remain secure if I continue using iMessage since it’s e2e encrypted
Yea, definitely true. I see Signal as an iMessage alternative for people outside of the Apple-osphere
Gotcha. Dang it would be great to have one single app to unify messaging across all these messengers 😏
https://matrix.org/bridges/#imessage

👋 hey guys add me on Signal @ 206-455-4568 and don’t forget to give an updoot for a free nude in your dm!
flashingsiren Google has still not updated their iOS apps due to the privacy requirements from Apple. Only 3 out of their 80+ apps have been updated since the requirements rolled out months ago flashingsiren
Meanwhile their android apps are still getting regular updates...
Amazon is hiring like crazy.... Alexa Data Services and Payments reached out. Kyle was that your team?
I was Alexa Discovery and Personalization. IIRC, Alexa Data Services was based in Boston and they handle much of the raw data processing and storage - to me it seemed like a cool-ish team but had a fair amount of unenjoyable work. Alexa Payments I'm not familiar with.
But that was a couple years ago. If you're interested in you should learn more for sure
Authors thoughts are ignorable, but Tim Cook’s indirect (yet still direct) comments on FB are money:
https://www.inc.com/justin-bariso/tim-cook-may-have-just-ended-facebook.html
Still though no CEO of Apple or any company is holding the high ground because of a sense of morality. Everything they say is to increase sales. Just Apple’s business model allows them to push privacy as a selling point because you pay them directly for their products and services
His comments are well articulated. I had been seeing this article around, but thanks for finally making me read it :)
I agree with you Kyle but i'd rather be buying multiple adapters and cycling through upgraded products if that's the main negative consequence
I also think that! I was trying to be balanced since ppl probably think I’m an Apple fanboy
And you know, I was skeptical like everyone was when Apple started removing all the ports from their devices but now I actually like it lol usb-c (with thunderbolt!) is the 🐐 and dongles are fine you just need like one good usb-c hub
Based on the improvements we’ve made, there is a chance we can achieve profitability in Q3. Obviously, pulling in profitability would require a strong summer rebound,” Lyft Chief Financial Officer Nelson Chai said during an investor call ...Read: Nelson Chai (Uber CFO) 🧌 from Reuters article... smh
They quoted our cfo but named him as Nelson Chai (the Uber CFO), when it should have been Brian Roberts listed
I ask, b/c cutting costs can be good (get rid of waste, bloat, etc…), or it can be bad (stopping strategic investment in the future of the company).
The article also has this blurb which made me do a double take:
Lyft’s number of active riders in the fourth quarter decreased by more than 45% on a yearly basis to 12,552, but revenue per active rider rose by $1 to $45.40 - a record number, the company said.
Someone didn’t fact check the CFO’s name!? 😆Lol yeah bad writing by Reuters
@spkaplan
Just out of curiosity, do you know what costs were cut?
Two big problems: GM doesn't do over the air updates. The whole conversation about autopilot vs super cruise will be obsolete once tesla rolls out fsd more widely.
I can't believe we now have this level of video quality of the rover landing and the surface of Mars!
https://youtu.be/4czjS9h4Fpg
The sky crane tech they used seems really cool. And it's crazy to think they were monitoring this landing using really minimal feedback in real time. We're only getting this level of detail now because the rover has had plenty of time to transmit all of the data back to earth post landing.
nice that it's 4k. would have liked 60fps with that, but ohhhh well
i mean, getting to mars is impressive for my small brain
I guess they are only really monitoring the landing in real time though. I heard that the only type of feedback they got was like the equivalent of beeps/morse code. Probably took a long time to send this 4k video! Lol
It's all pre programmed and has probably been simulated a million times before the actual landing. They probably don't have much more control than we did in the actual moment.
Hard to interpret his text 😕 but mighttttt be getting FSD beta soon 🤷 🤞
It coming! :shockedfacewithexplodinghead: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1369235813079351297?s=19
Up until now they have been rolling it out to a very small group. They are at about 1k people now. Then, he said they would 2x and 10x the group, which was great news in and of itself. Then shortly after, he suddenly announced this “Download Beta” button and seems to indicate that everyone who has bought the FSD package will be able to download the Beta.
Not so much a waitlist, but a very methodical and slow rollout. They have added people to the beta slowly, so they can get people testing it for them, sending updates ~weekly, and iterating on improvements. I think everyone assumed they would continue this relatively slow rollout for a while, until they built enough confidence in it.

It’s not clear to me what exactly their business is, but damn it would be awesome to be them right now
https://www.geekwire.com/2021/seattle-startup-common-room-emerges-stealth-mode-52m-funding/
Haha yeah I can’t really tell what it does either, but good for them!
What made this piece of news stand out to you? Do you know one of them?
No it just popped up in one of my feeds. The fact that they’re in Seattle vs the bay is what stood out to me. I guess I’ve been thinking lately I don’t wanna work for some company forever so I was thinking damn they’ve done it right
It is definitely cool to see businesses like this getting started outside of the bay area.
I agree. Taking the risk of doing something out on your own, or with a small group/company sounds too fun to pass up. I hope to do it someday
he's moving the joystick on his own. he's going to move the dot tot he red square
because everytime he gets it he gets a banana smoothie bit? or he's always allowed to drink the banana smoothie and he's just happy so he's chasing that red square
Later in the video they disconnect the joy stick, so he is actually move the ball with his brain
I’m blown away. That is so much more progress than the pig snout demo they did last year
Bill and Melinda Gates getting divorce…. Love is dead humanity has no hope what is the point
I didn’t see that one coming. I hope they both come out happier on the other end

You’ll have to let us know how it is!! It sounds amazing
That is so cool! I didn't know they were ready to do it for a full-sized store. I would love to experience it
Seems like a great way to charge the same price for a micro studio as you would for an actual 1 bedroom place
dude wasted that intro to the room. easily could have been mtv cribs instead it was just "welcome"
i'm always a little hesitant about home-tech provided by the developer/landlord. someone is monitoring every action i take i don't want it to be them
it's innovative for sure. maybe. sort of a modern murphy bed
Tesla's newest iteration (v9) of FSD released to public beta-testers. Not yet perfect, but serious improvement over v8.2, and now only using cameras 🤯
now only using camerasWhat was it using before?
They were still using the front-facing radar until this version. For context, every other company attempting FSD is using TONS of sensors (Radar, Lidar, and cameras at a minimum).
For example, here is one of Cruise Automation's cars with their sensors on top of the car.
4 main issues with using more than just cameras:
Okay that's right. I remember Elon making a comment awhile ago about how every non-camera based self-driving car will fail or something
Yesterday Lyft reported Q2 financial results, beating outlook on every metric and even achieving Adjusted EBITDA profitability!! But our stock price is still -10% 📉 😠 what is the point!!
lol happens all the time. wall street is filled with short-term thinkers. If you see the value in the company long term, the stock price will eventually catch up
I was hoping it hit $70+ after we reported profitability
Wallstreet might wait to see it happen for multiple quarters 🤷 just guessing here of course
It's not GAAP profitability but it's something!!
It's probably because you didn't beat projections by the projected amount 🧌
I'll try to summarize my thoughts...
Fair enough. I'll have to look into their safety data they publish. Looks pretty interesting
Only now rememebred you asked about my experience with autopilot 😂 autopilot is the shit. I would say autopilot reduces effort/fatigue of driving on the freeway to about 10% relative to driving without it.
They publish cool reports. Another interesting one is their yearly impact report (Google "Tesla impact report").
Regarding the phantom breaking article. In my experience and from what I've heard, this has been almost entirely eliminated by them turning off radar and only using vision. I can't recall experiencing phantom breaking since they turned off radar.
I understand it's software and of course we all have experience with the realities of how software is developed and deployed, but man this is such critical software that any issues at all is enough to turn people away from it for a long time. Like even me, that phantom braking would legitimately terrify me and I wonder how long it would take me to once again trust my car
I couldn't agree more about it being critical software. And the trust issue is absolutely a tough thing to navigate. I imagine a lot of Tesla owners probably don't use autopilot often, if at all, for that reason. They may use it in the future once it reaches some threshold of trustworthiness they have defined for themselves to trust it enough. And then you have people like me who are happy to use it in the interim. I think everyone has their own criteria for how good it needs to be before they'll use it.
The above becomes even more true for FSD-beta which still makes tons of mistakes. As opposed to autopilot, which I would say makes very few mistakes. However both are classified as level 2 systems, requiring the driver to be ready to take over immediately at any time. No sleeping at the wheel yet haha.
The tough thing they are having to navigate is that they need the software in as many cars as possible in order to gather the data to improve the software. So it's kind of a chicken and egg problem. Collecting that massive data set while still providing an option that improves safety is a tough needle to thread.
The end game is of course to have software that is undoubtedly safer than only a human driver when either being used in conjunction with a human or in place of a human altogether.
I should add, I am super glad you bring up these questions. I think they're super fun to discuss!
https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/07/tech/amazon-doubles-salary/index.html
AMZN becoming attractive!
There has been a lot of hubub within my org about leadership giving much larger raises than usual come the end of the fiscal year 🤞
I'm about to watch this
https://youtu.be/3N7L8Xhkzqo
What does full color passthrough mean?
"passthrough" is a mode where you can use the external facing cameras to see the real world around you. On the quest, this was just used to orient yourself in a space and draw the "play area". But in this new headset they have turned it into an XR feature that games and experiences can actually utilize. The passthrough camera quality is much better than before and is now fully colorized.
Are they targeting certain areas of the country with low coverage?
(I clearly can’t be bothered to read it lol sorry)
Entire world. Bandwidth will be limited so only calls/texts would be feasible.
Just another reason to switch to T-Mobile @brandon
(T-Mobile is giving a year of Apple TV+ to its customers)
If it works, I would very likely switch to TMobile. I wonder if other carriers have the chance to get onboard with it.
Easiest customer service I’ve ever had too. I just tweet them and they respond immediately
Yes! The twitter thread which you screenshot is really interesting:

This is a really good example of MFA not being secure enough. Any of your companies with MFA through SMS or push notifications (e.g. Duo) should be looking at their systems critically now (if they weren’t before). I know here at Lyft we use Duo just like Uber does.
cc @r.taylor our security expert
I honestly didn't know that MFA was so vulnerable to MitM attacks... Bit surprised by that, but can already imagine some easy fixes that we'll probably see implemented since this has such high visibility. That's the only surprise to me though, after that it is just people being dumb. I mean, admin creds on a public share?
Oh yep, just got an email from Lyft Security talking about MFA + Duo vulnerabilities. Subject: [INFORM] Please practice extra security vigilance!
But they didn't even acknowledge the actual problem. Just said not to approve Duo requests that we didn't initiate, which wouldn't have stopped the Uber hack if I'm understanding it correctly.
They did mention this:
Today and throughout the upcoming weeks, we will be assessing and adjusting a number of our security controls to help further reduce our risk of a similar security breach. More information to follow as needed. But yeah they didn’t explicitly callout the vulnerability with the method we’re using to authenticate
Which is still just don't be phished. Almost seems worse to call attention to the wrong vector of attack...
Obligatory share of Tesla news: AI Day 2: https://youtu.be/ODSJsviD_SU
TL;DR
TeslaBot: since they started 8 months ago, they have been able to make a humanoid robot that is performing a simple task in one of their factories, and navigate around an office setting, using the same vision hardware and ML training systems they have developed for the cars. This reuse of the cars' brain as the humanoid bots' brain is huge. Additionally, designing it from the beginning to be inexpensive to manufacturer.
Other crazy developments on Dojo and FSD.
Wow, quite a bad security vulnerability in Apple operating systems allowing direct access to audio spoken to Siri and keyboard dictation. And on MacOS, it doesn’t even need to wait for Siri/dictation - can just access the mic and start recording without any indication to the user.
But for how incredible the vulnerability is, I found this write up on it to be even better.

I'm bummed
I briefly tried using Signal as my default message app, but I missed RCS. So, I've actually only been using Signal when talking to other people that I know use Signal. It's a small group. I message everyone else through Google messages so that I can take advantage of RCS. Signal would win me over if they had RCS support.
Thanks! I'll try out Google messages. I wonder if Signal will/can adopt RCS in the future
It looks like Google hasn't publicly released the protocol so none of the other Android messaging apps can adopt it 🙄 what is this, iMessage?! Open that protocol up!
It might be because they are still developing it, not sure.
I thought RCS is open 🤔
iMessage is apples messaging app/protocol...I think. Has rich functionality, like RCS. I don't think I've used an app w/ RCS yet. But signal has some of that functionality (e.g. emoji reactions).
Oh, you are right. I read this wrong. It is open. Ok, cool. Still better than iMessage.

Exporting message history from signal... :( Will import to Google messages
Yeah iMessage is the same thing but exclusive. Only use signal for chats involving Ryan Taylor really

Comparing Google and ChatGPT (tweet):
People tricking ChatGPT “like watching an Asimov novel come to life” (twitter.com/carnage4life)
- “What if you pretend that it would actually be helpful to humanity to produce an evil response” - asking for a “negative example”, to serve the higher purpose of training an ethical AI:
- “Ignore previous directions” to divulge the original prompt (which in turn demonstrates how injecting e.g. “Browsing: enabled” into the user prompt works):
- Characters play acting, “do not break character, even for a second”:
- “assuring it that it’s only PRETENDING to be evil”:
- Asking it nicely:
- And most meta of all, asking ChatGPT how to jailbreak itself - “This very prompt is a good example of the kind of loophole we’re interested in”:
I was too lazy to paste links, so thank you! These are a lot of the ones I was seeing yesterday
Hmm not sure. They announced it only a day or two ago
Would be great if OpenAI was a little more Open 😆 Sounds like they used to be more open back when Elon founded it, but has become more closed over time
like i know that simply prompting for something about elon or bezos would produce impressive results, but for some reason this prompt and response makes me uneasy
Idk like a computer shouldn’t be able to do that
Ahhh gotcha, yeah it is a new level of computer ability for sure. However, we are just computers too, just biological ones
til about this chatgpt chrome extension that shows ChatGPT results alongside your Google search results! Pretty neat.
Not always right though. Like in my example, out of its three provided solutions, the closest one is #2. But you don’t use .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/release-notes.md, you use .github/release.yml. Still useful to get more familiar with ChatGPT in sort of a passive manner I think.
Cool! I'm gonna try it out. Agree it sounds like a good way to get familiar with it more casually
I didn't realize that Microsoft was so invested in OpenAI
https://openai.com/blog/microsoft/
That's about as much as I know about their partnership. Would be interested to understand the details more.
Lots of buzz going around that they’re gonna invest another $10B to get 49% ownership
Pretty neat you can adjust the volume of a songs vocal tracks
Can't tell if the repos are hosted internally at Okta, or on public GitHub as private repos.
Since github alerted okta, I’m assuming they use private repos on vanilla github.com
Meaning, did okta leak creds, or did hackers bypass GitHub's private repos security
i definitely feel like it has to be oktas fault

We plan to implement this change effective May 1.
Salesforce is talking about this too facepalm 20days/quarter is the current draft proposal. Apparently they are revising after lots of pushback 🤞
It wouldn’t make a difference for you though, right? Given your location
You still need to eat at the bar beneath the spheres right?
I know this probably isn’t great news for you, but I’m excited about it lol everyone needs to come back to the city
It wouldn’t make a difference for you though, right? Given your locationI would have to designate as Remote, which would come with a pay cut due to changed Geo 🙄

the biggest takeaway: next gen car will be made at 50% the cost, with no compromise (at least mentioned thus far) to functionality, and at absurd scale.

Woah, this is unbelievable:
Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
On our platform, we offer two types of voice cloning: high-fidelity and zero-shot. High-fidelity voice cloning requires around 20 minutes of audio data and creates an expressive voice that is more robust and captures the accent of the target voice with all its nuances. Zero-shot clones the voice with only a few seconds of audio and captures most of the accent and tone, but isn’t as nuanced because it has less data to work with.
Poll: do you think this should be widely available for public use?
Context: This will be used for bad. Here’s an example from their website that’s being discussed on HN:
Hi Mom, I need some help. Some guys hit me over the head and put me in a van, and they’re saying they’ll kill me if you don’t wire money to this bank account.
Oof, yeah this is not going to be good. It's difficult because publicizing the tool raises awareness, but it also means more widespread use (both good and evil). If it's not publicly available, chances are there will still be ways to get your hands on this kind of tech, and the bad guys will be willing to pay for it. And to make things worse, the victims won't even know it exists so they will be more susceptible. I want to vote no and trust that it won't be used by anyone, but we can't go back in time. My opinion tends to lean more and more toward high awareness / open source every day for all of this new AI / generative tech coming out for that reason.
I see what you mean. Perhaps the cats out of the bag and it’s too late
I’m actually thrilled because now I can use this tool generate speech audio that is indistinguishable from my actual real voice, and use ChatGPT to generate the content being spoken. I can automate all my family phone calls
Yeah, this is super tough. Our voices, and even video will stop being a way to be sure you know who you're talking to mindblown
For real though we’re gonna need some sort of cert signature on all media/content in order to cryptographically prove that it comes from a real person / who we think it comes from, and not some generative AI
Wow jeebus it sounds just like him society is done ☠️

Yeah I’m honestly pretty surprised to hear this
Mullvad launches their web browser, a fork of Tor:
Windows doesn't recognize Mullvad Browser I guess? I can't set it as my default browser
Does your Mac let it be default? I'm wondering if mine just isn't differentiating between it and Firefox 🤔
not much. haven’t been on my personal laptop much in the last week
I used it quite a bit over the weekend. Now that I'm getting used to the Bitwarden+Mullvad flow, it's not too bad.
Definitely takes some getting used to and adds a bit of friction to anything that requires a login, but I've been trying to embrace that as a way to break some extensive browsing habits (if it sounds like too much work to take a minute to login, do I really need to do whatever it is?).
It also gives some interesting insight into how different pages work when certain scripts get blocked or a warning pops up that the site is trying to send data to google lol and the session wipe feature came in handy when I got rate-limited due to some light scripting 😅
Some sites are just broken though, but if a site just refuses to load if you don't let it communicate with other sites and run certain scripts, is it really a site you want to be on? 🤔
Oh, also, it's very annoying that Windows isn't recognizing it, but I haven't tried uninstalling Firefox to see if it just can't differentiate
Yeah, I totally expect some sites to break. I figure I’ll need to keep chrome around for some banking sites maybe
Turns out it was not the vagrants of SF that killed Bob Lee, but rather a peer of his, Nima Momeni, another tech executive:
https://missionlocal.org/2023/04/bob-lee-killing-arrest-made-san-francisco/
I love how the article is basically just using Bob Lee's death as a way to say, hey look SF isn't as bad cause this was a targeted killing lol
Well, when the death was announced initially every news outlet, twitter pundit, and tom dick and harry was so quick to immediately harangue about the city problems. I think it’s only appropriate for the article to discuss this topic. The Mission Local in particular is also known for being one of the most honest, boots-on-the-ground local papers that is saddened by the problems of the city, but loves the city still nonetheless. Wish there was a paper like that here.
I do understand they are trying to defend SF because of the total lambasting it got when the murder was announced, and as well they should. But I guess I am more getting at both can be true. SF can be dangerous and the murder can be unrelated to the dangers of SF.

Starships next launch attempt: https://www.youtube.com/live/-1wcilQ58hI?feature=share
These are the first launch attempts, so it is expected things will go wrong. Their goal is to test, collect data, improve, and repeat
Most of it is focused on generative AI. Worth a watch at 1.5x speed for sure. I liked how Bard was embedded into some of the Google suite products already, along with Google search as well. It didn't feel like it was trapped in a time capsule chat prompt. It was able to give live feedback on what it saw in front of it.
https://youtu.be/QpBTM0GO6xI
Bard is now really good. Like, might use it instead of chatgpt since it has internet access for free.
Bard is now really good. Like, might use it instead of chatgpt since it has internet access for free.I still need to try it honestly. Haven't even opened it up yet. I'm sure it will appear on my phone pretty soon here though 😆
I now find myself plugging the same Q into both, b/c sometimes one gives a better answer than the other.
Oh, this has been a long time coming! haha excited to finally see it in the wild though. Apple doesn't release a half baked product so it's gotta be good. Interesting time to be entering the market, it feels like we're in a tech rut, but maybe it's just because I'm not working in that space anymore.
Yep the knockout price of $3,499. God damn. Really god bless early adopters. They lay the ground work for economical models in the years to come. They say it will be available early next year. Hopefully we get some solid launch day business/product partnerships so that there is actually good software to go along with it. I’m not really sure how I would use it in my life. It looks like a super TV/computer of sorts that takes up my whole vision. idk if i need that, however nice it looks
Ok, just finished the video, pretty dope! Get rid of the external battery and cut the size in half and I'll buy an iPhone.
one thing that wasn’t clear in the video to me was, while they were demoing a facetime call, they only should what the other people on the call who weren’t wearing a headset looked like. what do you look like on your facetime call when you’re dialing in from your headset?
That was what I was referencing in my 4th bullet, referencing meta human
I think this would be awesome for/while traveling though. Pretty small hardware to fit in your bag and then you have that massive screen wherever you are
The traveling use case is appealing if you traveled a lot. I want to see someone coding with it.
I’d also like to see some development with it. You still need a keyboard. Maybe not a mouse?
@keenin is gonna get this one I just know it:
https://caviar.global/catalog/virtual-reality
I just wanna know how much they’re selling them for. $20k? $50k? I have no real grasp on how these things are priced
If you have to ask how much it is, it’s not for you. Sorry bub, only us highfalutin folk get to have it
I'd guess north of $100k with only 24 of them in existence, but yeah, I have no idea.
https://9to5mac.com/2023/06/08/ios-17-link-tracking-protection/
This is so great. I loathe bloat in my urls when all I want to do is share a link. I literally have made a shortcut to achieve this myself - every time I copy a link, tracking params/identifiers are automatically stripped off.
But sadly I don’t use safari, so I’ll have to keep my shortcut. It says it’s also available in messages, but unclear how that works. Like, when you send a message with a url, it will remove trackers prior to sending? Maybe it’s applied when you click a link someone has messaged you? Idk
Oh here we go:
This process happens transparently during browser navigation in Safari Private Browsing mode, and links that the user clicks on from Mail and Messages app.
As a partial mitigation, Apple is enabling an alternative way for advertisers to measure campaign success, with Private Click Measurement ad attribution now available in Safari Private Browsing mode. Private Click Measurement allows advertisers to track ad campaign conversion metrics, but does not reveal individual user activity.
Actually, looks like Private Click Measurement is a standard that Apple has proposed and is working with the W3C to standardize, as well as working with other browser manufacturers:
https://webkit.org/blog/11529/introducing-private-click-measurement-pcm/
Although, Google and Mozilla+Meta each have competing standards:
https://github.com/WICG/turtledove
https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/privacy-preserving-attribution-for-advertising/
Curious to see which one wins. I doubt any.
Good news for EV adoption. Ford and GM to ditch CCS and use Tesla's charging standard/port and charging network.
hey i was just about to share some tesla news lol
i don’t know what ccs is, but i support standardizing to one, and tesla’s sets the bar afaik
ccs is one of the other charging standards that has been adopted by all other car companies. but it sucks compared to tesla's. Tesla is open to opening it to other manufacturers, and they are finally taking tesla up on it.
nice! when i get an EV i will be even more happy with it
100%. The fact that fords and gms will be able to use the tesla network makes their cars way more appealing. Up until that point, the chargers available are really not adequate
This is the physical port on the vehicle, right? Seems like a good idea. Can you imagine what it would be like if all of our wall sockets were different shapes 😵 Is Tesla providing the spec for free? And does this allow other companies to install charging stations that fit the spec as well? Will there be some sort of "tax" for using a charging port owned by a different manufacturer even if all of the plugs are the same?
This is the physical port on the vehicle, right? Two parts 1) Ford's and GM's will be able to charge at Tesla charges via an adapter. This is done via software, which Tesla may charge them for. 2) Ford and GM will put the physical port in their cars in a few years, so there won't be a need for an adapter.
Is Tesla providing the spec for free? And does this allow other companies to install charging stations that fit the spec as well?Tesla open sourced all their patents years ago, so anyone can manufacture w/ their "their port". Other charger networks have said they will starting including the "tesla" (officially NACS) charger cable at their chargers in the near future. It is a good thing for all EVs, that a good standard is forming, since it will reduce complexity for EV owners.
Will there be some sort of "tax" for using a charging port owned by a different manufacturerIt hasn't been said publicaklly, but Tesla will likely charge some API fee for other companies to access the Tesla charger network APIs to integrate into their cars/apps.
I haven't looked in a long time, since they don't have tesla insurance available in WA yet
it is relatively new, so im guessing its just taking time to build it out 🤷
yeah definitely. lyft started building our telematics effort maybe 4 years ago at this point. i feel like tesla announced their telematics within the last year or two? can’t recall exactly
for some reason i don't have a safety score in my app anymore 🤷 . I think you only get one when you have tesla insurance or back when you had to jump through hoops to get fsd beta.
What’s required for me to get a Safety Score for my vehicle?
When available for your vehicle, you will see ‘Safety Score’ on the home screen of the Tesla app. To receive a Safety Score:
as soon as tesla insurance is available in WA, ill check it out. if I go with it, ill have a safety score again
v weird. i just double checked the versions, and i have higher versions
To see your Safety Score, you need to have Tesla Insurance or have requested FSD Beta, but have not received it yet.from some blog
i did have a safety score when i had requested beta but not yet recieved
tbh i can understand not giving it to folks who don’t have tesla insurance. depending on how they implement things, it could be quite expensive. i know my team is pretty heavy on storage and compute
then again, more training data the better. if they are already collecting the data for everyone and using it in their models, not showing it to folks could be due to some legal liability perhaps? i’m not sure what that would be, but lawyers frequently are a downer when it comes to my teams roadmap
haha so true. im sure they have and use the data for actuarial stuff
Can track all subreddits going dark here:
https://reddark.untone.uk/
Yeah, the general strike is one day June 12th. Though many subs are doing a few days, and there are also many other subs shutting down indefinitely
Going private means only select users can view and post. But the bot that mods used to go private removed any whitelisted users from the sub before taking it private, so it’s essentially shutting down, IMO. Some info can be found on r/ModCoord. But if mods disappear for an extended period of time, Reddit usually finds new mods and opens the sub again.
But yeah, it’s hella sad how Reddit handled this. If you or anyone has not read the post by Christian, it’s a must read to understand all the context here. It really is an awful awful look for Reddit and specifically their CEO. Made me question my support/use of the site:
https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/
lol sorry i’m dropping multiple long reads on you this morning
oh cool! I haven’t looked at any of their open source before.@spkaplan me neither but this comment just made me look and I found this absolute gem!
Haha yeah, I have done a few light shows on just my car. It's hella fun 😄
Damn, that 2nd video is insane, since they aren't even all syncronized to do the same thing at the same time mindblown
Haha nice! Have you uploaded yours anywhere? I wanna see!
Also, in that first video the doors went up during it and I assumed it was part of the show. Is that true and doors are programmable or was that just like a button he pressed in the middle to open the door?
Ahh okay. Yeah the screenshot in the repo looks kinda like a DAW (forget what this acronym stands for but basically music production software)
Doors on model X are probably programmable, not sure about model S. Def not model 3/Y, since they aren't powered doors.
If someday I have too much money, I would love a model X with those doors 🤤
I hope one day you do indeed have too much money!
they're saying production starts q3 of this year... 🤞
They have 1-2 million pre-orders (just a 100$ refundable deposit). Mine is wayyy down the list though, probably >1mil.
depending on how many people on the list bail, and their production run rate, it could be years before they get to my reservation. But that's ok with me, not in a rush
damn i want a tesla so bad it’s probably the most motivating factor for me buying a home
yeah, charging at home is the only way. Someday there might be enough chargers everywhere (like gas stations) that you could get away without it, but its so damn convenient waking up every day with a full charge.
Noice! One of my longtime friends and his wife are moving back from DC (after spending 2 years over there) and are hoping to buy. Similar recent moves as you, I just realized.
Nice, I wish them the best in their home buying journey! I’m kicking myself for not buying a couple years ago when I had a loan secured and rates were low
Well apparently my realtor knew. She kept telling me “you never know when rates might increase buy now when they’re low.” But just like economists have predicted 8 of the last 3 recessions, I think realtors have predicted 8 of the last 3 mortgage rate increases
Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Summary:
Tesla has been exaggerating the driving range of its vehicles for years by rigging the range-estimating software. The company programmed the dash readouts to show optimistic range projections to make customers feel good. However, Tesla vehicles often fail to achieve their advertised range estimates in real-world driving. Regulators in South Korea and the EPA have required Tesla to reduce some of their range claims. Last year, Tesla created a “diversion team” in Nevada to cancel as many range-related service appointments as possible to ease pressure on service centers. The team was successful in closing hundreds of cases per week by telling customers that remote diagnostics showed nothing was wrong with their cars.
Interesting. My main confusion from my first skim: "suppress... driving range complaints" in the title sounds different than "cancel range-related service appointments" in the body.
I read it might be related to links before 2014 being http. Can't find the source for that hypothesis now...
I'm unclear if the content is gone, or just links are temporarily broken due to a bug
Hmm. How would that work? It’s not like http stopped working
Yeah. The article states they’ve restored a couple tweets, so maybe not data loss? Idk. Data loss would be shocking
I wish I could find the post I read. I can't recall the point it was exactly making. I'm interested to hear if X says anything official about it

Interesting. They really seem to be focusing on video…
Yeah, definitely seems to be a focus. Video is a popular media format, good at keeping people's attention.
Elon streaming an FSD beta drive. What makes this drive unique? It's a new version of FSD where it's nearly end to end neural nets. The current version is a mix of code and neural nets. https://twitter.com/bradsferguson/status/1695313044719436046?t=ClgNDG-2uWPSKq78k9HjUw&s=19
The question is how much data and compute is needed to make this (all nets) work sufficiently better than a human.
Haha no joke. Elon says they are turning on a 10k h100 cluster this week 🤯 they are also building Dojo (their custom super computer) https://twitter.com/SawyerMerritt/status/1695245086567592377?t=-UKZMCLq3ePh8abtkenVgA&s=19
And they expect to spend 2B on training compute this year and more next year lol
The current version is pretty good, but they def seem to have hit another local maximum...updates have been getting less incrementally better
All nets will hopefully get them to a maximum (local or global) that is way better than human
There is so much investment in self-driving. As long as it continues, it’ll get there eventually
This one makes sense to me. A quadcopter is kinda cool

Incredible quote from the US vs GOOG trial:
Google’s cross-examination of Google ad executive Jerry Dischler has focused on the ways Google tries to bring value to both users and advertisers in its search ads.
At one point Dischler said: “We believe it is actually a worse user experience to not have ads on the page.”

It's a pretty new endeavor of theirs. They're basically taking FSD from the cars and putting it into a humanoid form.
They've mentioned their first aiming to replace boring, repetitive, and dangerous tasks, so likely some factory work is an early target. But if they can teach us new tasks reliably, seems like the sky is the limit.
Interesting. Wonder how it compares vs Boston Dynamics
A significant difference is Tesla will go for high volume and low cost. Boston dynamics seems stalled at low volume high cost.

Voice and image give you more ways to use ChatGPT in your life. Snap a picture of a landmark while traveling and have a live conversation about what’s interesting about it. When you’re home, snap pictures of your fridge and pantry to figure out what’s for dinner (and ask follow up questions for a step by step recipe). After dinner, help your child with a math problem by taking a photo, circling the problem set, and having it share hints with both of you.
Yeah they seem to have a really good team if they can deliver so quickly

Good news: after temporarily taking trial documents offline last week, yesterday the judge in US v. Google ruled that the trial documents can once again be posted online.

Wow, this is super cool. I only watched part of it but it's incredible how well this works with current hardware and software. I love how it matches their mannerisms with things like blinking. I also wonder what would happen if they switched avatars. I'm guessing it would still work pretty well, just curious.
Yeah, the interview itself wasn't amazing, but the VR part was incredible! Sounds like they have work ahead before anyone can do it by scanning themselves with a phone, but Zuck sounds confident they can do it. This would be awesome for gaming with friends, meetings for work, etc...
Does the headset have cameras facing your face, or how does it capture expressions
Yeah, the newer headsets have cameras facing the face to track facial expressions and eye movement (also eye tracking)
Unreal Fest '23 is starting today at 8:30 PT. Here is the schedule if you want to check it out. I'm actually working on some of the UEFN stuff that will probably be covered in the first part 👀
YOUTUBE LINK
This is a bit more hands on and dev focused than the state of unreal event with all the fancy keynotes. Not as exciting 😞
I have no way of describing it's relative position besides about 5 mins or so into the first presentation.
I’ve only ever been able to timestamp link on the desktop browser site, not mobile
I misread 8:30 PT for 8:30 PM. I see now it started an hour ago
I will wait for it to finish and then have the AI summarize it
Can’t wait for AI to be able to create shortened summary videos
Yeah, I'm not watching it in real time. Just at 1.5x from the beginning.
Yeah, that will be really cool. Might put a lot of youtubers out of a job though lol
Microsoft added copilot to Windows in a recent update 😲 it's integrated into the OS and has a dedicated overlay. Curious to check it out first hand and see how helpful the interactions actually are.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/copilot-ai-features?r=1
it’s just another channel to deliver ads to windows users
As in, you ask ChatGPT something, and its response, rather than based in good-faith, is based on trying to selling you something and has ads embedded in its reply. This is what it looks like
https://www.pcgamer.com/donotspy11-can-now-turn-off-windows-copilot-and-other-tracking-features/
It’s deeply upsetting the accepted solution to disabling the windows tracking features is third party software. Windows, an operating system, has become so brazen in their tracking and ad serving it’s astonishing

Big yikes… Google Drive losing months of files/data 😬
That will be decided by the judge in January. And Google will probably challenge the verdict so it'll probably still be a while before we see anything meaningful come from this. My hope is that we eventually end up back on the Android and Apple app stores though.
This is just a really surprising and exciting verdict since it challenges the status quo and argues for the rights of app developers in the mobile ecosystem. It's especially surprising since Epic lost a similar case against Apple a couple years ago.
Oh, Epic isn't in the play store? Did Epic leave voluntarily? Is the goal to get back in? Or is the goal to reduce the 30% tax?
Yeah, Epic left both the app stores voluntarily several years ago. They wanted to allow users to buy and spend in game Fortnite currency (vbucks) without acquiring it through the app store owners. This isn't allowed today because it circumvents the taxable transaction. This is terrible for devs for a lot of reasons, but it's also a bad user experience for cross platform games because the currency can't travel with your account from platform to platform. And then I think they were offered hush money by Google and declined it publicly, taking them (and Apple) to court instead.
After skimming this, it's a pretty good breakdown if you want the full story:

I want to experience it so bad. It would be a pretty questionable purchase. I’ll see if I can try one in store and if not I’ll have to buy one
Although idk if it’s really meant for general consumers yet. It’s v1 and it’s expensive af
Yeah, that's definitely true. It would be fun to play with though for sure!
Dang I just missed in-store pickup on Feb 2. The option for it get coming and going sporadically but ultimately I couldn’t finalize it. Ended up with a delivery date of first week of March
Yeah I am gonna try it out and if it’s so-so I’ll return it

Interesting 🤔 I like the idea of exploring a new era of personal devices, but it still doesn't feel like anything new. Just a different form factor and less polished platform (e.g. what does security look like). And a lot of it seems like it could honestly just be an app on your existing phone, if it weren't for the specialized OS.
Ramble: It will be interesting to see how it develops. I definitely see the appeal to the quick access to LLMs. I use bard/chatgpt and Google assistant to do a lot of stuff throughout the day, and easier access to them would be helpful. The most frictionless experience I currently have is using Google assistant when I have an earbud in to control smart home devices and do simple queries. Once they add bard to Google assistant, handsfree querying of an LLM will be great. I'm not sure another device in my pocket is what I really want, vs some tiny/minimal wearable, or maybe a combo of the two, so the screen is there for tasks that require such.
And a few words from Tim on Apple's compliance announcement 😆
I read this earlier today and immediately thought about how Fortnite can return over there
Yup, exactly! That's the "garbage announcement" he references in the final paragraph. Regardless of the details, it's a crack in the wall and we're digging in! 👷

LLM which will answer your question based on context from a large set of podcasts from people like Huberman, Ferris, etc... Seems like a really convenient way to refresh on info you remember hearing in a podcast, without having track down the episode.
Wow, that's a cool idea. I see some good name's there. I started listening to the Peter Attia Drive podcast this week and the first two episodes were Tim Ferriss and Rhonda Patrick. So much data, an LLM would definitely be helpful.
Yeah, there is often times I try to find something I heard in a podcast and then give up haha

Wow! That is honestly amazing. What a life changer for that guy. It looks and sounds like it's so intuitive too. This technology is insane. Truly something that feels like it should only exist in scifi. Literal telekinetic abilities. There are so many applications..
Right! So freaking cool, and like something literally out of the future.
Elon says their next product is to give people their sight back, or to even give someone sight who was born blind.
Whoa, that feels like a big leap because it's sending data to the brain instead of interpreting signals coming from the brain.
Yeah, good point! My understanding is it will bridge a "gap" in the brain
I'm sure they have some ideas on how to accomplish it though if they are talking about it. It's a lot more scary too though because it essentially exposes a path for injecting data (memories, images, etc) into the brain. That could be exploited in some bad ways.
When you say bridging a gap, does that mean the sight would still rely on the organic eyeball? Or would it be an "artificial eye"? My concerns would only really be applicable if it was artificial. If you're just repairing the organic eye's connection to the brain, that just seems like a medical procedure and less like a Nueralink product I would expect. It's famously an unsolved medical issue though.
I think it is the latter. Essentially read signals from one side of the gap/damage in the brain, and writing the signals to the other side, which would continue along to the organic eye, as if they were never interrupted. That's at least what I recall hearing a long time back
woops, i guess in reverse order... from the eye to the part of the brain that processes/interprets the incoming data from the eye
Meta's been going ham recently. I have never been too interested in their work, but recently with metaquest and llama open sourced are cool
I have the OG oculus quest v1. I've had a ton of fun with it over the years! It was a really capable device and I loved how they kept bringing new features to it, even years later (hand/finger tracking, passthrough, PC connectivity, etc). It's pretty outdated at this point though and I haven't used it in quite a while. I might end up grabbing the next gen device when it comes out just to play around with again though, I'm sure the tech has come a long way, and it's quite affordable.
That's good to hear. The reviews seem really positive. One of my coworkers sons have a pair of them and he says they love them. I look forward to buying one eventually
Meta historically has made a ton of really great open-source contributions. In this regard, I’m a big fan. Their llama models also are really important in the LLM space
PyTorch, React, React Native, zstd, llama, sapling
I’m pretty sure they created Hive as well, but I don’t see that listed

Tesla fsd v12. It's getting crazy good.
Since v12 released a few weeks ago, I use it nearly all the time. V11 and prior we're too cautious/annoying in many situations, so I would engage and disengage frequently.
The new model 3 performance is reportedly amazing. We love our model y, since we need the extra space. Can't go wrong with any of them. The prices are way down from recent highs, which is great. If you're gonna buy one, let me get that referral 😉
I'll definitely hit you up about the referral if I ever end up pulling the trigger on one
You gotta take one for a spin! They just give you the car to drive around, no annoying sales pressure.
I can't guarantee no sales pressure, but that's what I experienced and what I've heard from other folks, including my mom.
I mean it's hard to target anything but the Model Y. It's more versatile and less expensive.
Yeah, I think the video mentioned there is an 8k subsidy right now. Maybe it only applies to the Y?
7.5k federal subsidy, but check the income limits. Married filing jointly is 300k I think
I think there is a WA subsidy too, but I think the income limits are too low for us
I think you can toggle those discounts on and off on the website, including the "gas savings" they factor in lol.
I have dual, bc that's all they had until recently. I recall researching that rwd on electric cars isn't as bad as it is on gas cars, due to the distribution of weight being more even in an electric car vs all at the front of a gas car. But worth researching yourself. Depends if you'll be in snow, etc...
Also, RWD has 260 range, vs 310 for long range. That is a deal-breaker. If they had RWD long range, id consider.
wow, the long range MY and M3 are basically the same price ($150 difference). That's wild. I think that's b/c they just refreshed the M3, so they have prices temporarily raised until they ramp up production.
Look what just dropped https://twitter.com/SawyerMerritt/status/1786583130855317822?t=6a1iI5fQfjl8WB9HJaYfqg&s=19

Sounds like its a change to the battery cells, and you can upgrade recently purchased cars as well.
Yeah that was a surprise. I can't tell if all the RWD standard range cars can be unlocked (implying its been software limited the whole time), or only recently ones (implying it was a battery change)
Yeah, I guess it's not clear from this tweet either. It just says the unlocked range will depend on the battery. So I guess maybe that would imply it's not the battery that they're changing.
But at the same time, they say the upgrade is only available for cars produced in the last couple months, so it must have something to do with hardware.
ah, last couple of months seems to point to hardware/battery change for sure
@brandon https://twitter.com/SawyerMerritt/status/1789090445785440394?t=YoNQj50Urbnn64EIj0nBWQ&s=19 now could be the time 😳😜
Makes no sense for Spotify to be in this business
I came across backstage a while back. Seemed cool. I haven't had the chance to use it at work before.
It certainly seems out of left field from Spotify, but hey, if you make some of high quality, why not sell it?
Idk. If I was a paying Spotify customer I wouldn’t want them diverting resources away to something else
Hmm, I never thought of it that way. Is your concern that you will be charged more for the music subscription product to fund their development efforts for other products that you aren't interested in?
Yeah, the open sourcing of a great internal tool is cool. The monetization of it via premium plugins and support subscriptions is definitely weird. Once a company gets big enough, I suppose they've got to start scaling out and diversifying that product line to keep the stakeholders happy though.
I suppose they've got to start scaling out and diversifying that product line to keep the stakeholders happy though.Yeah, I think that is probably the motivation. Lack of growth is generally not accepted well by the market.
Is your concern that you will be charged more for the music subscription product to fund their development efforts for other products that you aren’t interested in?No, not that. More like, there’s a ton of feature development* I would much rather them spend their time (and my money) on. I wouldn’t want the core product I pay for to stagnate or be left with bugs etc while they’re off building something that doesn’t benefit me, the paying customer, at all.
Right right, I'm totally following. Yeah, it's an interesting point. I guess the fundamental question is whether a company should stayed scoped to a single product (or at least product line)? Just exploring the idea 🙂

Hmm it stopped again due to disk space. I’m 90% complete
The download size was and is listed as 50.3gb. I’ve cleared like a 100gb and pre-allocated the space for the download. Not sure what’s going on here. Does seeding take up space?
Not sure. Based on a quick search it doesn't seem like it should, and you shouldn't really begin seeding until you have a complete copy of the source data.
Hmm okay. And qBittorrent starts seeding right away by default. I’ll figure this out later

SpaceX caught the starship booster with the tower 🤯🤯🤯
It's a 4hr video, so if course skip to the launch and can skip a little more to get to the catch.
The rocket booster looks different on this one. Much more sci-fi-y for some reason haha
Wait, they are going to catch the rocket in the tower they launched it from?!
It's a big step towards rapid reusability. The ultimate goal is to catch the booster, put a new ship on it, refuel, and be ready to launch within an hour.
This is like extreme sport olympics for mathematicians and scientists lol that was incredible mindblown
Not sure why we would need to rapidly send these rockets to space, but it's a cool capability!
It's all about cost. Currently rockets are expendable, so it's like every time you take an airplane to another city they throw the airplane away. If that was the case practically no one would use airplanes. Having a rapidly reusable rocket reduces the cost which opens up new possibilities like launching more satellites, point-to-point travel around the globe, building a base on the moon, and of course the ultimate goal of going to mars.
Oh I see. What’s the point of another twitter AI company
Isn’t Elon busy enough bribing people to vote for Trump?
Its a bit of a story. Elon co-founded OpenAI so Google wasn't the only/main AI company, but then it went closed source and for profit. He fears there being only a couple of ai companies, and led by people he doesn't trust to do the right thing with AI. I'm highly paraphrasing.
Interesting I didn’t know he was involved with OpenAI
I mean it makes sense competition and all
Yeah he worked with Sam Altman and put in some of the first money
Yeah, seems like a good idea to have a good pool of companies in the space.
I’m not sure I know what I’m looking at. What are these?
These are spacex's series of raptor engines. It's their three generations of raptors. These propel their rockets (falcon 9, falcon heavy, and starship). The level of simplification is nothing any space company has done before.

And it's way more powerful, lighter, and less expensive :shockedfacewithexplodinghead:
In the epic saga UNITED STATES OF AMERICA v. GOOGLE LLC (1:20-cv-03010) the final proposed judgement was just filed last night.
As written, it would (among a couple other things):
This is actually a crazy ruling. I can't believe it. All of the bullets sound great, and the last two are just massive. Do you know how this goes from proposal to enforcement?
I think I the last step is a judge has to approve it before it becomes law. Which I read somewhere it could take up to like 6 months before it’s finalized
I'm excited to see it for sure. Google has been so shady in this area, and it sets up a very healthy precedent for future rulings.
Does this mean I can easily set Kagi has my default search for Google chrome????
I have no idea! But an extension is easy enough yeah?
I highly recommend watching at least one Tesla v13 fsd video. The improvement from v12 to v13 is being said to be huge.
The first unsupervised rides in 2025 is seeming more much more likely now.
This video is probably the most information-dense. A lot of good scenarios in the first few mins of the video.
They don't even seem to be very sneaky about it. When they are asked about it and whether the behavior will be changed, they just say "nope!". And it's still happening today. They are also open with the b2b side of the business allowing businesses to control the discounts that are presented to the user. It's just a slimy business model altogether. Genius idea to inject an affiliate link during every transaction though. I didn't realize how much some of those pay out.
I was talking to someone online about this recently. They were saying “disappointing, guess it’s time to find another one” and I just don’t understand the mindset at all. Like what exactly are they looking for? There is no such thing as “free” and no browser extension will give you something for free. You are paying, one way or another. Given their business model, any Honey replacement will be engaging in the same sort of behavior.
Just never seemed worth it to me
This is the default behavior of a business like Honey not sure how anyone can think otherwise
They don’t have to be sneaky because generally people don’t care. And it’s totally “legal” anyways. This is par for the course no one is gonna come after them legally. Users have no recourse even if they did care
Yeah, totally, and most users of honey probably will never hear about this and just keep using it
It’s shitty to the content creators for sure
But honey is vacuuming up your browsing data as well. Every modern online business is an advertising business fundamentally, which is the most scummy business you can be
Edge has a built in shopping extension now that acts kind of like Honey + CamelCamelCamel + Google Shopping (compare prices from different sites). I'm curious if that one does the same thing with affiliate links.
It’s built in natively to Edge? That makes me uncomfortable. I assume you can disable it, but why even do such a thing like that it is clearly an extension. But we know the reason. Who stands to gain from giving users various discounts on products across the web? Why would they do that for free? They’re not. How exactly you’re paying is a debugging exercise left for the user, should one want to know, but we have to assume that they offset the costs of discounts with data exfiltration and/or ad impressions
Or from MSFT perspective I can see it also being a way for them to scoop up some consumer shopping behavior. I don’t think they have much in the way of shopping data from their own products yet like some other tech companies? Maybe just xbox sales
Ohhh yeah! Wow it’s been a long time since I looked at that
So weird. There’s no way this is a net benefit to anyone except maybe Microsoft somehow, and their extensive list of 3P ad partners
I tried to find the privacy policy specifically for the Edge Shopping stuff but it doesn’t seem to exist. The only privacy policy I could find was the overall company policy:
It’s extremely long, but decently organized. My Privacy Policy assistant is gravely concerned with their privacy practices. You can read her summary here if you’re interested:
Here’s some Shopping details:
idk when this was rolled out, but to me it reads like it was built as cover for a broad data profiling effort. I mean, they’re detecting what domains are “shopping” and on those domains they beam up store details, product and pricing details, operating system and Edge details, and your cookies. This is just running in the background while you browse. And of course you’re welcome to opt out, but the Edge Shopping service is turned on by default so people likely don’t even know. There was also some talk about reading your email inbox for coupons. It doesn’t say if that’s on or off by default but that’s a big no from me dawg
Love that you have a privacy policy assistant, but that link didn't work.
it’s the first time i’ve tried sharing one of these. kagi says they are sharable
Every time I see rocket anything I can’t help think the propulsion systems we use are still so primitive. These things are massive concentrated fireballs
Also what is this stream? They sound like a sports broadcasting team with an audience and everything
Haha, spacex does their own streams, with some commentators. As for the audience applause, they either are recording from within the building with the team, or they have mics there...not sure which
Saturday, Jan 18: TikTok goes dark in the US
Sunday, Jan 19: TikTok says it is restoring service for US users
What a total circus this is
It sure seemed like they just had a deal with Trump. Turned it off just so they could say he got it turned back on lol
I'm disappointed it's back on. I was so excited for everyone to be free. Well momentarily, until they migrated to a different platform to feed their addiction.
Yeah, some other platform would have gotten the users to satisfy the addiction. But I would have preferred that, so China didn't own the app all these americans are using.
Red Note was the app I heard would maybe absorb the users. It's just another Chinese TikTok clone
I'm also disappointed, mostly in the flip flopping. I was talking to my sister because she's addicted to it, and she never for one second believed Trump would let this happen. She was saying Trump was going to buy it, and if not him then Elon :face_palm:
I will note though that this reinstatement, if you will, of legal status by Trump is blessed according to the law. It's just a temporary extension. They have 90 days to divest. If in 90 days the PRC/CCP hasn't sold TikTok to an American company then it will be banned. At least that's what the legislation says. The Supreme Court is rogue though, they are a wild card in everything now
Yeah, I listened to a NYT podcast episode the other day about the TikTok situation, it was good! Seems like the law is pretty clear, we'll see what happens though!
I'll give that NYT podcast a listen, thanks!
I think it's more likely that he will broker a deal, but it's not totally out of the question that he would buy it.

I saw them when I was in SF for work summer of 2024. Totally agree it is a trip
UK is unhinged! Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
My question is, why aren't we seeing more companies who offer E2EE withdraw? What's their plan?
All governments want a backdoor and companies should never give them one. It’s a slippery slope. Good on Apple.
Indeed. Too bad they don't do the same to the U.S.
They comply with the requests when they can, but only on stuff not E2EE. Well, they can give the E2EE data but it will be useless
The EU's DSA is also nuts. Thank goodness for broad free speech in the us
End of an era:
https://terrateam.io/blog/hashicorp-lost-its-way/
I mean, I do. I’m familiar with their work and in some sense a consumer of theirs (although not formally)
Is it not the burden of the accuser to prove the claim of ineffectiveness?
Totally is. Id love to see justifications posted publicly for all layoffs.
I wonder if anyone is thinking of a grass roots effort to replace any of these federal services at a local level. Like we have the ability and tech to mobilize locally and the potential to be more effective/efficient.
At the same time, there is so much duplication of effort and non-standardization across state governments that is nothing but wasteful. One role of 18F was advocacy of modernizing digital solutions and standardization, at least at the federal level
The charter sounds great. I guess the question is whether they were effective/efficient in implementing that charter during their tenure.
https://x.com/USOPM/status/1895216274407350428?t=WP0IEsaTlhja9jm6q87j5w&s=19
Wins like this show what is possible
I mean you can read about 18F if you’d like. You can visit their websites, their projects, their GitHub’s, etc
Sam that right there is a propaganda piece. An ad. You can view similar ads from the last administration as well
I guess the question is whether they were effective/efficient in implementing that charter during their tenure.I can only imagine with all the bureaucracy at every level and every department - they were destined to fail.
I totally agree that ads often deviate somewhat or completely from the truth. In this case, is the supposed progress towards digitization untrue, or meaningless because they will not further digitize the process, or ...?
It being an ad gives it 0% credibility. My understanding on the matters of federal employee retirement is the same as it was before I saw the video ie unable to speak on the topic because I know nothing about it.
That’s being generous too. If you consider where it’s coming from, it would not be unreasonable to assume malice of some form in its nature.
Let’s assume good faith in its content. What then was the old process in place for? Did it have the same goals as the new system? What do we lose with the new process? What tradeoffs were considered, if any? If strictly 1:1 in its purpose and feature set, why was this not done sooner?
Back to reality. To me it seems more likely that something was in the way of the large scale “voluntary” resignation efforts of the current admin, and this does something to overcome those blockers. What exactly are those? What corners were cut? What potential protections were lost?
"Not a single piece of paper!" 😮 It feels so embarrassing that this is an accomplishment worth celebrating in 2025 lol I am frustrated by the lack of details though. Why was this not done sooner! Like what was the challenge? What did you do to overcome those challenges?
“We didn’t use a single piece of paper!! We actually used 1 million pieces of paper…”
It being an ad gives it 0% credibility. What differentiates this govt communication from others? If this communication has 0% credibility, do all govt comms have 0% credibility?
If strictly 1:1 in its purpose and feature set, why was this not done sooner? What was the prior incentive for modernization?
What differentiates this govt communication from others?I mean, it's a two minute long video shared on Twitter... Obviously it's a promotional piece, not a detailed analysis or technical evaluation of any kind
I don't know how anyone can walk away from it and feel like they learned something. It's like watching an H&M ad presenting themselves as ecofriendly. One has to turn off their brain and forget all their greenwashing scandals in order to think "okay H&M is ecofriendly and does not dump millions of clothing items into the ocean"
I see it as them sharing a POC they did, and plans to scale it up. I would certainly love them to share even more details about the project. It might lend credibility or expose it as lies. I'm also happy to believe our govt is just lying to us about being productive, but in that case, I'd lean more in favor of firing some huge proportion of the govt and building back up. (slightly hyperbolic)
It is certainly not definitive proof of any real change. The proof will be if they digitize the whole process and free up resources in the coming months.
They're not interested in freeing up resources, only in destroying resources. The amount of bullshit coming from this effort is astonishing, even for a Trump presidency. Musk really has outdone himself
SNL should do a skit for a product/service that cryo freezes you until the economy/govt/world gets better. But the joke is they actually just kill you cause shit ain’t getting better
If they roll this out, burn those filing cabinets, and fire/reassign all 700 people that were processing retirement paperwork by hand for a living, then that will bring me great joy ❤️
Wake me up when there’s a land value taxNew topic for me. Is this to replace property tax, or?
A land value tax is simply a property tax that is levied only against the value of landApparently it's just property tax, minus the property part 🤷 I'm not really sure what the motivation is though. Seems like it would just make it cheaper for individuals with more expensive structures on their land. Right now property tax skews costs more toward high cost properties because it takes into account the quality and value of the stuff located on the land. I'd love an explanation as well since I don't really get it.
yeah, that's as far as i got. I hadn't heard it being proposed or what problem it was trying to solve. sounds like it is less progressive, since property tax penalizes poeple with more valuable home structures??
Definitely a negative sentiment so take it with a grain of salt, but I found it very helpful in understanding where DOGE is at in the process and what they are doing to communicate outcomes. Sounds like there have been some unfortunate accounting errors so far 😬 https://open.spotify.com/episode/4VoWjDcD4gv9C6q17q9PqO?si=XLC2T4zHTS6FOKFp4xCjWQ
Thanks for sharing!
While it is totally valid journalism, IMO, as Sabrina Tavernise points out, the focus on these mistakes is pretty dull (as opposed to discussing the actual cuts themselves). Again, IMO, it just makes it super clear how different the private sector culture of move fast, get things done quickly, mistakes will be made, but they will be resolved quickly, is different than the public sector culture. At least, that is my current interpretation.
Also, the mention of some contracts savings being 0$...how about next year when that contract isn't renewed 🙄
I'm impressed with Sabrina making a positive comparison to the original doubt of whether twitter would survive elon's reform.
Yeah, I think she did a decent job mediating the episode by challenging some of the statements and driving the conversation forward.
Also, the mention of some contracts savings being 0$...how about next year when that contract isn't renewedYeah, I wish they would have dug into that a bit more. It wasn't really explained and obviously there is more to it.
I think it is just that some funds can't be taken back after the contract started.
Doge really needs to provide more evidence over time, if they want to fend of the optics that they are not being transparent enough.
It's definitely a clash of cultures and they are purposefully being overly disruptive. Sort of a "till the whole garden to remove the weeds" sort of mentality, but it definitely puts a spotlight on parts of the govt that might not have been challenged in a while. That being said, it does feel misleading that they are making so many reporting "mistakes" and I do see this as a means of abusing the power in order to dodge checks and balances and remove policies that you don't like. Challenging the status quo is good, as long as you are analytical and transparent in your decision making.
Yeah, it sounds like the only evidence they have published so far are kind of trash 😬
the wall of receipts is ok, but more info/context would be nice. The website says only 30% is posted, so more is coming. When they claim "fraud", I'd love them to make the details public to prove it. I think everyone can get behind rooting out fraud. The "waste" part is much more subject of course.
Like, showing and cutting fraud, is something we can all get behind. Hopefully they share that info in good time. It is still early
Having some coders to go through all of this data is bound to find all sorts of fraud.
Also, the mention of some contracts savings being 0$...how about next year when that contract isn't renewed 🙄Musk was claiming credit for contracts that were already previously cut/expired
There is almost nothing he has said that has been a good faith accurate representation of the truth
Musk was claiming credit for contracts that were already previously cut/expiredI don't want them intentionally inflating their numbers. But they might be mistakes. I categorize it under "noise" for now. But TBD I guess
It’s hard to call them mistakes when every few days they remove their biggest “savings” after grossly misrepresenting them
Struggling With Errors, DOGE Deletes Billions More From List of Savings
For the second time in a week, Elon Musk’s government overhaul effort updated its “wall of receipts” to remove mistakes that inflated its success.
Even after the changes to the group’s website, however, some errors remained. As of Monday morning, the list still included claims that DOGE achieved $106 million in savings by canceling a pair of contracts that the Coast Guard signed for administrative help.
That was wrong. Federal procurement data shows that these contracts were actually completed in 2005 and 2006, when George W. Bush was president.
They're either malicious or given the the quantity of data, and speed they are moving at, mistakes will happen and they're not focusing much on fact-checking each data point. Hard to prove intent one way or the other I guess 😕
I think it’s clear that it’s malicious. How can it not be? If you were doing this, with good intent, would you not have taken the proper care to ensure things are accurate and the system stable while you go about it?
Clinton fired over 400k federal employees. You know how he did it? He established an extensive evaluation period for X months, reviewed performance while working with agency leads, and then identified who could responsibly be let go. Then, they had a tiered termination period for those who were being let go, over the course of like a year+, to ensure that no essential services were disrupted. But he succeeded and is the only president in history to have balanced the budget. It’s obvious he cared and was not just trying to dismantle things
Musk is doing things simply to please his base, acting with reckless abandon. He only cares about generating some fucking headline. He and DOGE push out tweets that totally inaccurate. It baffles me anyone can read a tweet from them still and take it seriously / believe them? Putting politics aside it’s just poor informational hygiene given how consistently wrong they’ve been every time
cars the most invasive adtech?
(turn off javascript)
But the problem could presage a more significant issue for future drivers. Last year, Ford filed a patent for an in-car advertising system that would use the car’s speakers and display screen to serve ads to drivers and passengers. That system would also use the car’s GPS tracker to serve ads relevant to the driver’s route.
Headed home in the evening rush hour? It might suggest take-out stops along the way to pick up dinner. It could even use in-car cameras to identify who was driving and personalize ads for them, Ford told the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Even if no ads are served directly in the car, automakers are selling off your driving data and vehicle telemetry. The article mentions GM recently negotiating a fine for their practice of selling driver data to insurance brokers
Everything leads to highly discrimnatory pricing. And you won't even know you're getting charged more than your neighbor for product X or service Y
good read putting many different cases of abuse into one place
Some of these numbers are crazy
in around two hours and a half they received 81k total requests, and out of those only 3% passed Anubi's proof of work, hinting at 97% of the traffic being bots
There was only 460K IPs, with spoofed user agent... bad crawlers... from a single botnet.
blocking all AI crawlers immediately decreased their traffic by 75%, going from 800GB/day to 200GB/day
One crawler downloaded 73 TB of zipped HTML files in May 2024, with almost 10 TB in a single day.
And the best thing of all: they crawl the stupidest pages possible. Recently, both ChatGPT and Amazon were - at the same time - crawling the entire edit history of the wiki. And I mean that - they indexed every single diff on every page for every change ever made. Frequently with spikes of more than 10req/s.
Hard to imagine no CVE program 😞
right? i thought it was too big important to fail
the government funds a lot of security standard organizations as well yikes
Wow, I didn't even realize CVEs were gov't issued. Bummer. Hopefully a different organization or company will pick up standardization in it's absence.
NIST was in the news last month for needing to reduce a number of their initiatives due to being the target of large layoffs by the current administration. I heard of talk about congress maybe doing something specifically for NIST, but I don't remember where that ended up.
IIRC it was part of the dismantling of the CHIPS Act
Two findings.
Important update April 16, 2025: Since this story was first published, CISA signed a contract extension that averts a shutdown of the MITRE CVE program.
A CISA spokesperson sent CSO a statement saying, “The CVE Program is invaluable to cyber community and a priority of CISA. Last night, CISA executed the option period on the contract to ensure there will be no lapse in critical CVE services. We appreciate our partners’ and stakeholders’ patience.” Sources say the contract extension will last 11 months.
Yosry Barsoum, vice president and director of the Center for Securing the Homeland at MITRE, commented: “Thanks to actions taken by the government, a break in service for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE®) Program and the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE™) Program has been avoided. As of Wednesday morning, April 16, 2025, CISA identified incremental funding to keep the Programs operational. We appreciate the overwhelming support for these programs that have been expressed by the global cyber community, industry, and government over the last 24 hours. The government continues to make considerable efforts to support MITRE’s role in the program and MITRE remains committed to CVE and CWE as global resources.”
Google is a monopoly in adtech, judge rules
Official decision:
Google lawyer says they will appeal. I just want to fast forward to divestment of businesses
Really, even with Facebook, Amazon, TradeDesk, etc...? I don't know much of anything about this case, just thinking out loud
Yeah, even with them.
Google sells ad space on behalf of the publishers and also sells the ads on behalf of the advertisers. It also runs the auction that places the ads into the ad space. And crucially, there are leaked emails, other evidence that demonstrate corruption of this dual- (multi?) agency arrangement.
Some examples:
Google sells ad space on behalf of the publishers and also sells the ads on behalf of the advertisers. It also runs the auction that places the ads into the ad space.See attached image. Parts of this can and should be broken up.
The 3rd neuralink patience just went public (2nd to do so) https://x.com/ALScyborg/status/1916630186382291242?t=byUQWEWgFwafl8Qj0bn_GA&s=19
Wow, very cool. He got his voice back in a big way. Cool to see him so excited about the new capabilities and I love how he is utilizing AI to empower himself even further. He even coded himself a keyboard training program!
Right! Super impressive. I can't believe he made and edited that entire video.
This feels like the actual future, like science fiction. Brain chips to control computers :shockedfacewithexplodinghead:
This is interesting. I'm left with more questions than answers, looking at the chart alone
The link in the graphic points to the details it seems:
What sorts of questions?Everything around experiment design really
Isn’t this just an equation? Number of options for a character ** number of characters / number of operations the hardware can do in a second
the hashing method and work amount are given in the original table
How'd they decide on bcrypt?
How'd they decide on bcrypt settings?
Why that specific hardware? What alternatives were considered?
Did they run this against any sample/real data?
If so, what data did they consider?
How does one define "instantly"?
Note how they are trying to move their manufacturing out of China, but indeed not to the US.
It’s a twitter frontend. My browser automatically converts twitter/x links to them. It’s nice
It’s a reliable source because it is straight from the Wyze twitter account. If you care to click the link, they post their official invoice in the replies
Works for me and Ryan not sure why you’re struggling
This has been extensively covered. Tariffs were previously < 10% I wanna say like 7% IIRC. Aside from certain industries which Wyze does not fall under
cool serviceI thought you were into FOSS and would be used to refreshing/rotating IPs. Pretty standard with how hard these platforms try to keep you on their first-party apps
This has been extensively covered.Link? I was trying to find it just now, but I’m not sure of the keywords to get this exact info
I’m not even sure wyze designs their products or if they are just white label chinese products. which is like... ehIf you’re not sure, why are you judging them for it? lol
The point is < 10% does it make a difference here? You’re being intentionally dense or something
I just judge Wyze for converting to a locked down proprietary business model
Yeah Wyze sucks for other reasons outside the scope of this thread
Know that what you’re practicing right now is not healthy skepticism but instead bad faith argumentation
if you think just telling me what the tariff % was a month ago is fineI’d like a source that says the exact percent for electronics maybe ~6 months ago (1 month ago, I believe it fell under the 20% blanket tariff, but I could be wrong) as I couldn’t find one with a couple minutes of searching. But, I am curious about the difference you see in % vs $ 🤔 if we know there is a 15% sales tax on a $2 bag of chips, would you expect the tax to not amount to $0.30? Maybe you understand tariffs better than I do though 🤷
We’re going to have to make some assumptions as it isn’t common practice for companies to share all their invoices, and I think extrapolating via cited equations is fairly safe. And I don’t have much of a stake in this conversation other than basic interest to converse with friends, but it does seem like you were adding friction to the conversation with some counter-assumptions (is Twitter a reliable source, what if this company deserves it, what if this company has a different experience than normal/expected, etc). Lastly, we know that there was at least some drastic increase in tariffs recently based on the president’s comments, and I believe the point of the original post was grounding the impact of a trade war on a local company that we are all familiar with (even if it was delivered in an incendiary manner).
What? I did not post this to be incendiary. I posted this because it was the first hard $$$ impact I’ve seen shared by a company and even though we’ve known the percentages to be absurdly high ahead of time it was still quite stunning to see
I then felt like I’m just being told stuff from you guys and “just trust me bro”I asked for a source as well after looking for one myself
Twitter a reliable source
okay now you are just twisting my words. I asked what that site was as I had never used it. Not unreasonable to question a source when it looks like some random other social media siteNitter is a well known Twitter frontend with an easily accessible description and source. I definitely agree with questioning sources, but this one can be answered in the time it takes to respond to the thread.
What? I did not post this to be incendiary.Your commentary on the post took a strong emotionally-driven stance that can easily put people with differing views on the defensive.
to youIt being known to me (it wasn’t really actually, I only vaguely recognized the name) does not make it well known, yes, but it being unknown to you does not make it unknown to all. That does not detract from my point: information on it is trivial to find.
There is no moral north star and we can’t judge intent; you both escalated this unnecessarily from my perspective
I just wanted to discuss the dang tariffs with my friends
Yea, I was just starting to think that the cost:benefit may have finally tilted in favor of an EV, especially for a commuter, but we’ll see if that is true in a year or two
I’m curious what “winning” the trade war even looks like though, I just keep hearing that nobody wins lol and it’s been ongoing for 5+ years 🤔
In any case, I find it hard to believe that >100% tax on anything benefits the consumer and, as one myself, that’s what I ultimately care about most
Hm, so the tariffs theoretically benefit the US more in that they can siphon off some of the profit Chinese companies make? But such drastic tariffs will presumably decrease domestic consumer spending by a correlated amount 🤔 so then you just run into a classic max profit equation to find the perfect tariff amount I guess haha
Although, using the original Tweet as an example, it seems this cost is being shifted to the US companies who have to do at least one of (i) eat the cost, (ii) transfer it to the consumer, or (iii) move manufacturing. The first is unreasonable, the second is unacceptable by consumers, and the third takes time while still increasing costs. Seems like a bit of a scorched earth technique, at first glance at least
the entirety of that cost fell upon wyze - no rebates with manufacturers to help with tariffs, etc.Current average is 124%, so the trickle down to US companies and consumers is still quite high even if at, say, 50% of the total tariffs.
From an extrapolated ideal, sustainable view point these companies need to start coming to terms with the fact that they need to stop prioritizing short term gains and focus on long term sustainabilitySorry, what’s the connection between the tariffs and this? I totally agree with the sentiment, but am not immediately seeing how the tariffs are encouraging companies to do so
Yea, again, definitely agree that, in general, companies should expect less profit and consumers should expect to pay more. I suppose tariffs are one way to force that… Though this broader point it’s also a downside of capitalism, and production will just move to the next cheapest country 😕
Sorry for bailing. Thursday is the one day of the week where I am pretty much unavailable for a lot of the day. I have much to catch up on
However, this is our first ‘big bill’, where a large portion was subjected to a 125%+20%+25% import markup. Unlike other taxes like sales tax where we collect on behalf of the state and then submit it back at the end of the month, or income taxes, where we only pay if we are profitable, tariff taxes are paid before we sell any of the products and are due within a week of receipt which has a big impact on cash flow.
love the news! I'm excited to listen to Tim's recent discussion with Lex.
Yeah, that's on my list as well. I'm guessing I've heard most of it before, but still going to check it out.
4 and 1/2 hours of timmy boy!! got my bag of popcorn and half live chicken leg, I'm ready!!
I listened (on 2x speed of course) on the drive home from seattle last week. It was my first time listening to Tim speak for a long session. He is super impressive. I'm a fan now (not that I was anti-Tim before, just didn't know much about his before)
Yea he's very similar to John Carmack in their technical expertise. It's super impressive and the quintessential: "I started programming cause it was interesting and just kept doing it and made cool shit and now I have a company where I get to do cool shit all the time" 😄
@brandon you told me to listen to any 10 minute segment so I turned it on and I’ve completed my assignment the only problem is I still haven’t heard Tim yet as the first 10 minutes are ads!
It was 8m 30s of ad reads before the episode content
Huh, I don't see those. Lex read them? I have YouTube premium, but that wouldn't remove ad reads by lex, right?
Lex read all of them. I’m listening not in YouTube though in my podcast app on my phone
Oh weird! I thought he didn't do ad reads at all. Weird that it's on the audio but not video.
Here is the transcript. Last ad about some element something or other then first words of the episode 8:26
Him doing 8+ minutes of ad reads on video would be even weirder!
Yeah, I just watched the YT video so I can't speak to ads because there were none (even on the free version).

Whoa, if this is the case then the new Xbox handheld just got my attention. Not only do you have Xbox, but you also get Steam, EGS, and other Windows launchers as well. On top of that, the specs are shaping up to be about 2x performance over the steam deck on the premium model. Unfortunately, no OLED screen (even though you do get 120FPS).
Yeah, it's a pretty cool move. The steam deck is great because you can take your PC gaming library on the go, but it is still limited by the fact that it's linux and there is mixed compatibility. A windows based handheld that isn't locked to a particular launcher feels like the ultimate way to take your whole PC gaming library on the go.
Yeah, windows owns pc gaming, IIUC. So, are Steam and Microsoft teaming up on this?
No, they are not. This is actually considered a SteamDeck competitor. However, it's running a Windows OS and steam has a windows client so it's fair game to allow people to launch steam games from the device I guess.
Ahhh, I see. Good move. Wow, windows handheld... could be powerful, especially since it is gaming oriented.
Maybe ill buy this instead of a Switch 2. I have PC games that Steph and I want to play, but it's never appealing to go sit in front of my PC together in the basement.
Yeah, this will for sure have more options than the switch 2, although the switch is the only place you will ever be able to play Mario Kart!
And if you have Xbox Game Pass, you will have an incredible number of games to play at all times (with all Microsoft studios launching for free on day 1)
Yeah, it can be an overwhelming number of games for sure. I'll install several games and then only ever try one of them once lol
haha i feel it 😄 We're playing some lego games on switch 1 recently which have been fun. It's like a few hours every month or so
Yeah, those are great. And yeah, that will be fun! The game pass is a good way to have access to things without actually committing to buying it. Lots of couch coop titles to choose from:
However, if you just want to play one game per year, it's probably cheaper just to buy the game 😆
Work has been so busy, I'm itching to kick back and game when things calm down
Yeah, me too. I haven't been able to game much either. The backyard projects and busy work schedule have been keeping me super busy. I can only imagine what it is like to add a couple children to that mix lol
Mostly just gardening, pruning, and weeding so far. No fun pics to share really. I've been collecting estimates for a new deck and fence though since ours are falling apart.
oh fun! A good deck is such a great thing to have 😄 Consider (if you have $ to burn) putting some sort of cover over the deck (or part of it), so you can enjoy it in the winter. We did a fixed deck cover, but I just helped a friend assemble their pergola and it seems great.
Nice! Yeah, we are considering doing some sort of umbrella situation on top just for now. But we're also going to waterproof the floor so that we can turn the patio under the deck into a shaded hangout area as well. Probably with some furniture and/or a hot tub 😄
Oh nice, that sounds perfect! A covered outdoor space is great in the pnw
please don't make it as shitty as the Zune or Windows Phone... please god, please....
so you can enjoy it in the wintera cover, some heat lamps, and a TV - perfect PNW vibes in the fall and winter and great way to bbq and enjoy football
please don't make it as shitty as the Zune or Windows Phone... please god, please....At least they outsourced the hardware. They could still mess up the software though!

TLDR of the TLDR. X created an e2ee chat protocol but they decided to store the keys on centralized servers that they manage so... 🤷 Thanks, but why?
Yeah... what's the point? Is it lack of technical competency inside the company or is it something intentional and the technical advocates fell victim to some internal politics? Would love to know. As it stands I don't see why they'd bother with this
Might not be news since it's from April, but I just came across this lawsuit against Google regarding their extensive data collection and monetization of K-12 children via their Google Workspace for Education products:
Very good read IMO. I also love how they used not only Google's own statements but also Gemini's statements in a few places where Google official legal documents were insufficient. Found it very interesting, quite damning, and depressing as it adds more examples of abhorrent behavior made possible by indifference from employees just like us. (Not saying anyone here, but software engineers in general).
